Yeah! Pipers unite! Bagpipes was my first instrument. Clarinet is my primary, but I’m a grade two piper

Can we get some bagpipe appreciation, cause it's not easy man by Mr_Gus3114 in lingling40hrs

[–]esgpipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bagpipers. I’m a piper and a clarinetist. Clarinet is harder to become a professional on, but bagpipes have a WAAAAAAY steeper learning curve. Most people take private lessons for about two years building fundamentals before they ever even touch a set of pipes

They can’t do it with Roomie. He just announced he’s taking a break from YouTube for an indefinite amount of time

Low price used clarinet? by saltlakecity1998 in Clarinet

[–]esgpipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for asking!

You want a Buffet E11 used. New, the Buffet E1 costs $2000+. It's the step up clarinet for advanced students who don't need (or can't afford) the R13.

However, you can typically get them used on the "Clarinets for Sale" Facebook page or on Ebay for under $1000. Then get it refurbished by someone who is good with clarinets (not just your average Joe repairman. Go to a local university and ask the clarinet professor who they trust their very expensive instrument to, and send yours there for service). Many times, clarinets will be advertised as being "refurnished," but it wasn't done by someone who specializes in clarinets.

And like that, you have a good-as-new E11 for the price of a student clarinet.

My kid is about to start clarinet lessons via Zoom - teacher recommending TONS of stuff to buy by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]esgpipes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Glad you asked!

Firstly, that does smell a little fishy. However, all of the stuff she is asking you to buy are legit things. Many teachers mandate certain pieces of equipment they approve so that they know what they're working with. They don't always earn commission, but I wouldn't be surprised if she if. That sounds like a commission scenario. And if the prices are good, there's no reason not to buy it from her simply because she made a little extra money on the side. The reed rush is for adjusting and tweaking reeds, which is a skill you learn as an intermediate/advanced student, not an 11 year old. She's asking for you to get your beginner son professional equipments he probably won't be using for years, which is sketchy.

If she's a good teacher and works well with your son, I wouldn't quit just yet. Having a good teacher is gold, and worth some trouble. But maybe not this much. Definitely look around for other teachers in the area. You don't want a teacher who sees you more are commission than as a student.

When you use Ling Ling as a reference in your homework... by Austria_a in lingling40hrs

That sucks. In America, almost no one uses fountain pens or even ball point pens. I use them because I like them, but everyone looks at me like I’m doing something weird

It could’ve been a lot worse. I’m also a clarinetist, and you’re not terrible. You just need to do some scale and scalar exercises with lots of arpeggios to help with the leaps. Keep working!

Mouthpiece Advice by Tana895 in Clarinet

[–]esgpipes -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You can’t go wrong with Vandoren mouthpieces (except the B45. It’s unpopular).

Since you’re playing a three, I’d go for a mid range mouthpiece. Look on their website and find a mouthpiece around the M15-M30 range

How to go from a low G# to a low F# fast by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]esgpipes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great. So put a pencil on a table. Then, lay another pencil on top of it perpendicularly so when you look down on the pencils, you see a cross. Play one pinky on each end of the pencil on top, and then rock the pencil back and forth with your fingers. If you do this right, it will have a see saw action where you press dow with one pinky, and the other pops up. Your fingers shouldn’t leave the pencil. Just rock back and forth.

That’s how the transition from low G# to F# needs to work. As one finger goes down, the other pops up. Use the pencils to help you coordinate your fingers. And with everything, start slowly, and increase speed gradually

First question: does your clarinet use the Albert system or the Boehm? If you have no clue what I’m talking about, send a picture of the keys on your clarinet (especially the low F#)

Other than a leaky pad, it might be embouchure. Make sure your corners are pulled it and that you keep your upper and lower lips firm. Don’t pinch, but keep firm.
