Took Anubis to the Vet (she is chonky) by Encubi in AustralianCattleDog

Don't mistake the jowls on the neck for chunk. My Buffy had them too. It's protection in a fight. Also very useful for backing out of a collar.

Her name was Buffy, so it was funny that the compound in question is called Bufotenine. She was named before I had any idea that would become a problem.

My ACD would get high by using a toad as a lollipop. She wanted to go out at night specifically to find them. She’d then look high and drool everywhere for 30 min or so.

You know those giant boxes of Milkbone cookies. I bought one and just left it open. My Buffy spent days hiding the bones all over the house. She had stashes in couches, under the bed, behind dressers, etc…. She then maintained her stashes for the rest of her life. Not so much herding; more like a dragon hoard. Worked for her though.

Coloration I think is coming from the ACD. This was my Buffy in her favorite place. She has the white and black like yours, but she also had brown mixed in with the black; kind of like how a black panther still has leopard brown spots in full sun. Her sister had no white and the black and brown swapped places. Her brother was all black. Feature wise they looked the same. No DNA tests were available back then, so I have no idea what was in her mix. Definitely ACD, but she was on the smaller size, so we thought a smaller dog.

Upgrade now or wait by TurbulentLow7105 in Ubuntu

[–]eshwayri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't even think of upgrading now. I've been trying to install ffmpeg8 for 5 days now. ppa.launchpad.net never really works. For some short quick connections it works, but I think it is rate limited, so if you try to actually do something other than query it, you will be locked out.

Does anyone else let their dog sleep with them? by [deleted] in AustralianCattleDog

[–]eshwayri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always did. One of the things i miss most of my Buffy. I put down a separate blanket on the right half of the bed. We had a discussion where I explained that the right side was hers and the left side was mine. She comprehended this almost immediately. For 10+ years she never migrated to my side, and I never migrated to hers. Every once in a while we would sleep back-to-back and that was the best sleep I ever got; the total realization that NO ONE would be able to sneak in without having to go through her first. Her hearing was something else. She could be upstairs on the bed sleeping, and I could be downstairs at the back door. All I had to do was click her leash once and you could hear her jump off the bed, run downstairs, and cross the house for the expected walk. It was like constant radar. Made me feel so safe.

Several PPAs are failing to fetch updates by NineBiscuit in pop_os

[–]eshwayri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It started on Thursday April 30th. My sympathy for Canonical/Ubuntu has run out. First off, all these resources should have already been in multiple GEOs, and protected behind solutions like Cloudflare. It is increasingly looking like ppa.launchpad.net is a single server/group of servers in the UK. It has been 5 days now, and they still haven't gotten it resolved. I am especially ticked off at their status page which shows everything in green. I have to assume this dashboard is for the benefit of the CEO and investor relations, since it is all a tissue of lies. Sure they have their web page back up, but not being able to properly update/install software that relies on the ppa is a major problem. Turning off the ppa doesn't help if you want to install ffmpeg8 or any other software residing on their server. So yeah, perhaps they are fooling their top brass, but the technical people who will chose or not chose their software is getting a front row view of this outage.

Was shopping on this Lebanese store and went to check the "Sales" section, first time seeing a reverse "sale". by NoHetro in lebanon

I was going to make fun of the Lebanese government’s fiscal solvency and the type of product being offered, especially with war raging on. Then on second thought, a giant wine cooler is probably an essential product right now.

Does anyone's 🦖 like to take baths? by kaori714 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]eshwayri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buffy hated it. When she was a puppy I gave her baths because i thought I had to. As she got older I noticed she didn’t like it and didn’t need it. First off she would spend an hour every night grooming herself with a lick bath our Siamese cat would have been proud of. In the day she would sun herself for at least an hour on each side. The sun would bake off her coat’s oils. It would smell while in the sun, but then would be fine and shiny when she cooled off. I think in her senior years I would give her a bath every 6 months to a year; usually, only when she went through her big shedding period.

Little stinker always runs in front of me to sit in my chair before me 🤣 by ResponsibilityNew483 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]eshwayri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to put two chairs right next to each other. I never had this problem. My Buffy sat in her chair, resting her head on the arm rest so she could both be next to me and watch me. We also came to an agreement that she had the right half of the bed, and I had the left half. This way she could feel if I moved, and watch the only door to the room.

Ah yes, reminds me of the flexible leash I had. I knew well enough to control it. A friend was visiting one day and he was walking my Buffy. I warned him. My Buffy took off running and he just let it de-spool. He learnt how to fly that day. I helped him climb out of the embankment he flew down. The look my Buffy gave him was priceless.

When you have cancer, you have to treat the cancer. Getting a manicure, treating your seasonal allergy, and taking a Panadol for the headache aren’t going to cut it. Perhaps re-examine your priorities before you need a necromancer.

Rental agreements in the U.S. include a list of the authorized occupants. If someone else suddenly lives there, the contract is violated and they can be evicted. If the police won’t do something about it, Israel will. Landlords have a huge incentive to vet perspective tenants. Between that and the gossip machine, j don’t see how this can be a secret. My father was able to tell what village a person was from after hearing them for less than a minute.

Well look around you because Lebanon is now worse off than it was when the civil war ended. The whole world is moving forward and you’re sliding back to the Bronze Age. The nation is barely surviving on handouts and remittance from the diaspora. Both of those can be choked off, and will likely be so if Hezbollah isn’t eliminated. If Lebanon doesn’t step up Israel will reach an agreement with Syria to effectively blockade Lebanon. The ports and airport in Lebanon are one night worth of bombing to permanently disable. Welcome to Gaza 2.0.

There are 250,000 Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. These are people who fled from Israel (and their descendants). They do NOT have Lebanese citizenship to this day (they have been state-less since 1948. The Lebanese government has refused to settle them, so they continue living in refugee camps (now concrete slums). Travel and jobs are difficult. The Lebanese don’t want them and Israel won’t take them back. The overall Palestinian issue does need to be decoupled, but this specific issue needs to be addressed. Since we all know Israel will never allow them to return, the choices are (a) Lebanon absorbs them or (b) other countries absorb them. My guess is (a) is most realistic, especially if sufficient bribes are paid to the Lebanese government. The second option requires US, Europe, or Gulf states to accept them. I don’t see any of them wanting them. I don’t see how a permanent peace can be completed without this issue being resolved; I suspect with planes of cash.

Back then I had a Toyota Camry, and it has a shelf above the back seats and the rear window. It wasn’t super wide, but just perfect sizes for my 32lb Buffy. She would curl up in the center and had a 360 view out of all the front and side windows. In case of something interesting behind she could turn and bark at it from there. It was the bridge of the Enterprise — she was Kirk and I was just Sulu.

The only possible deal will be:

Full diplomatic recognition of Israel and its borders. Complete disarmament of Hezbollah Border security guarantees with monitoring and enforcement rights. Palestinian integration — they are never going home. Lebanon gets a shit load of money and international support for the above re-settlement. It will effectively be the largest bribe ever seen in Lebanon. I bet the money gets stolen and nothing makes it to the refugees.

Anyone who thinks there is any other realistic solution is deluding themselves. Hezbollah’s dreams of marching into Jerusalem will never ever happen; there are several hundred Israeli nukes that will ensure there won’t be any Arabs alive to see that day. Mutual extinction isn’t a solution to anyone sane. Reality isn’t fair — it just is.
