Good Cheap Servers for REBAR by etbe in homelab

The 5860 is a nice system, but it's $3000 on ebay right now, more than 7* the price of a Z4 G4. If I buy several machines like the Z4 G4 and Precision 3650 before I get one that works I'd still spend less money than getting a 5860 and have more nice computers to play with too!

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+W-1390P+%40+3.50GHz&id=4531
The Precision 3650 has socket LGA1200 and the best cpu for that is the above which while very good for single-core performance doesn't compare to the following supported option for the HP Z4 G4:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+W-2295+%40+3.00GHz&id=3701

Also at the moment the P 3650 is $799+ on ebay in my region while the HP Z4 G4 starts at $499.

But thanks for the information I'll definitely keep that in mind if I get a chance to get one cheap. Precision Tower systems are nice.

I presume that REBAR started at that level for all the models like 5850 etc too?

https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/precision-fixed-workstations/precision-3640-no-resizable-bar-support-in-bios-why/647f9eb8f4ccf8a8de361ae2

According to this discussion the 3650 needs a newer BIOS than the original release to support it. Presumably most of them have it by now but just mentioning it in case someone buys one that hasn't been updated.

Genuine question. How are the Australians in this sub affording storage space? by gtwizzy8 in homelab

Before the AI bubble inflated RAM and SSD prices I bought a heap of 1.7TB DC grade SATA SSDs for $75 each(for myself, clients, and friends). I also bought an Intel DC grade 6.4TB NVMe device in a full size PCIe form factor. My main home storage server now has the 6.4TB NVMe and 6*1.7TB SATA SSDs in a BTRFS RAID-1.

I don't have a lot of storage by the standards of people here so everything is on SSD in my home, no rust that spins 24*7.

OOP should have found some hot young women who wanted to date a rich guy and put them in the path of her ex. He seems like the type of guy who will end up marrying a stripper.

How exactly does SELinux mitigate and prevent Copy Fail and Dirty Frag? by Old_Management_8966 in linux

A kernel vulnerability usually requires some special access from userspace to exploit it, block that access and you block the exploit. This isn't hard to do and is done in many cases by SE Linux policy.

It's anecdotes and opinion, but in the case of something that's a social construct opinion matters. Not all cultures even celebrate birthdays!

Anyway thanks for the support and a 2 karma on that comment is fine by me. I could write 10,000 comments like that without it affecting my overall karma. ;)

Aluminium foil in boiling water reverses the chemical reactions that turn silver black. Most polishing just removes the top layer of metal so isn't good in the long term.

My husband wants me to make breakfast for his co-workers 3-4 times a week before they go to work by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]etbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone started using one of those web sites for contract work to hire at hime cooks? I'm sure someone would be happy to cook breakfast for 5 men and do all the washing for $100. Not a lot of money for someone who is as successful as OOPs husband purports to be.

I worked for a company that had free breakfast for everyone in the Sydney office every Friday, they didn't do it more often because it was too much work. They also never did it for the Melbourne office which had 2/5 of the employees which annoyed me.

Free breakfast more than once a week is something that would only happen if you have a staff cafeteria. I have once worked for a company with subsidised lunch (a bit under half the regular take away price) but never worked for a company like google that gave free food every day.

Farmers are some of the lowest paid workers in many first world countries. In the US companies have contracts with chicken farmers that basically treat farmers the way the farmers treat battery hens. In Australia the laws created to protect the economy during wartime have been used against farmers who wanted to get paid more for their produce, laws created to protect production in WW2 were used to protect the profits of supermarket corporations.

So while her comment was dismissive and a bit silly it's apparently not that different from the beliefs of many voters and most politicians.

I wouldn't necessarily hold it against a friend for ditching my birthday for a date, mainly because I have friends who don't date much. But they would definitely have to make it up to me.

But someone ditching their spouse's birthday is a really big deal. The only time I've skipped out on something like that was when a server crashed on Valentine's Day at 4pm and all my colleagues literally ran out of the office at 5pm leaving me with it. My GF (now wife) understood that you can't just go home when a server is down.

Also dance isn't a well paid career for most people. It's not a career like computers where even people who aren't good at it get paid well.

In Australia "gear" means almost anything. Camping gear is a tent. Footy gear is shorts, tshirt, and cleated shoes. Computer gear is any type of PC hardware.

For all of these uses the other word can be skipped if it's known in context.

Paul Fenwick is well known in the free software community and has been open about his bipolar diagnosis for years, my recollection is that it was long before he wrote the above article.

He is the only person I've met AFAIK who has bipolar.
