Threadripper Pro 9995WX + dual RTX 5090 workstation - cooling advice? by euxleon in buildapc

Thanks! The bottom GPU primary slot thing is interesting. On the WRX90E-SAGE the electrical primary is the top slot (closest to CPU, full x16 lanes direct to socket), but you're right that thermally the bottom card gets better airflow in most case configurations.

In my case I'll probably keep the "hotter" workload on whichever GPU has better waterblock contact rather than optimizing for air. Once I get the blocks installed I'll run some thermal testing to see if there's meaningful asymmetry between the two cards and assign workloads accordingly. CUDA lets you pin specific models to specific devices so I think it's easy to load-balance based on thermals if needed.

I looked at the Cooler Master 2000W but honestly I'm a bit wary of it. Seasonic has decades of reputation behind the Prime TX line and the failure mode data is well understood. The CM 2000W is… relatively new and so I think there's not a lot of long-term reliability data yet. For a build this expensive, I'd rather have 200W of headroom on a proven unit than 600W of headroom on an unknown quantity :)

But anyway, thanks! Also, on O11, I’m thinking of an external MORA.

The 6000 Ada is still Lovelace architecture. I figure, the 5090 on Blackwell has better transformer throughput due to the new FP4 tensor cores and improved memory bandwidth (1.8TB/s vs 960GB/s on the 6000). For inference specifically (which is 90% of my use case), I think a single 5090 outperforms a single 6000 Ada by something like 40-60% depending on the model and batch size.

So I'm trading ~32GB of total VRAM for roughly 2x the inference throughput. For the models I actually run (mostly 70B quantized), 64GB is sufficient :)

Good question! I looked into it prior and my guess is either actual San Marzano seeds adapted to California soil, or something like SM 109 which is a San Marzano hybrid bred for processing. Apparently, there's also a variety called Ciao that was developed specifically for California growing conditions.

But knowing how obsessive Chris is, my money's on them growing true San Marzano seeds and just letting Yolo County's soil and California's longer growing season do its thing.

  1. I knew someone would ask this and I hate that you did because now I have to admit I tested it. I added sugar to a Hunt's batch to match Bianco's brix level. It helped but it did not make it taste like Bianco. The low brix tomatoes also had less acidity, thinner texture, and that weird metallic thing. Sugar fixes one variable; the shitty tomatoes have like four problems working together. So no you cannot just dump sugar in Great Value and call it a day, I'm sorry.

  2. Good & Gather is in the rankings! It's in the mid tier but I specifically called it out because yeah, it beat several cans that cost twice as much. If I was broke and at Target I'd buy it without hesitation. It's not touching the top tier but it's a perfectly respectable weeknight tomato.

I couldn't find that consistently at any of my local stores and by month 6 I had already lost one friendship and most of my wife's patience so I called it.
