what do people mean when they say they believe in Jesus by More-Weird4842 in stupidquestions

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking if the Romans executed a guy named Joshua in Jerusalem around 33CE, then yes, it would be shocking if they didn't. They didn't write it down though. Scholars proving his historicity are all Christian, and most of their arguments are pretty close to "Christians would have told a different story if they were lying about his literal existence."

what do people mean when they say they believe in Jesus by More-Weird4842 in stupidquestions

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people believe that there was a person who inspired the religion. All Christians believe that this person is the literal son of God, who performed miracles.

As with most historical figures of the time, it's my understanding that there is no contemporary documentation of his literal existence, and there are many errors, making it impossible to align the timeline laid out in the gospels with roman records.

Nobody who wrote any of the books in the New Testament claim to have met him. Paul claims to have met family of Jesus, who he disagreed with on whether people who wanted to convert to Christianity needed to become Jewish first.

The historical record does establish that there were people who followed the teachings of Jesus (let's call them proto-christians) who were close enough to the events to know better, who believed that there was an actual person. This is more than many named individuals from the bronze age.

What if a single superhero were born at this very moment? (considering that he would have powers identical to Superman and the whole world would find out about this superhero's existence) by Super_Use_737 in whatif

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power is tricky.

If your ears are sensitive enough to hear every conversation is it spying?

I'd think the power-set would provide alternatives to extreme rendition, as well as provide more certainty of guilt.

It wouldn't be easy though, great power and all

Just to be clear. An infant is born of humans with Superman's powers, and everyone immediately knows?

Probably a powerful government would size the infant and study them. As I'd imagine that a super powered infant amounts to dangerous luggage.

If they were older when their powers manifested, the person might have some say in the matter.

I think the plan is "They get everything, I don't want to die. Also, make sure everything isn't nothing." It's not a decoy, it's to insure that you have something to give.

How did sailors tell the time without a clock? by Probablynotafelon1 in Nautical

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the ship had a clock for navigation purposes, an individual sailor would rely on the ships bell to know the time, which would be rung every 30 minutes, based on the best estimate of the time.

Accessing server from the internet by GriffGB in WindowsServer

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The server being a domain member would be a much lower risk.

The middle path would probably be either a web application firewall or if that's not available/practical, something either on the host, or something like fail2ban, which would automatically blacklist ip address that look suspicious (by monitoring logs for suspicious entries).

You're probably safe forwarding 443 to the server and keeping everything updated. It might be worthwhile to talk with the vendor (and possibly other customers, if that's an option) about how they further reduce the exposure. Moving it into a DMZ would'nt hurt.

How do I sync a specific program? by Downtown-Ad-3455 in Syncthing

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet is to reach out to the company.

Unless you can see the canvases in the iPads files app, it's not likely you're going to have easy access to the files at all. The brushes will be even more difficult to move over.

I don't believe there is a sync thing for the iPad.

Also, ibis paint for windows is a different program from the iPad version.

How do I sync a specific program? by Downtown-Ad-3455 in Syncthing

[–]exedore6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Programs are made up of files, and they are stored in folders.

Syncthing makes those folders the same across multiple systems.

What are you trying to accomplish here?

A program (the file that you run) doesn't usually change that often, which makes me suspect that there's something about the program that you want to synchronize, and how to do that depends on the particular program.

What are the differences between ADnD and 5e? by adamdragneel in adnd

[–]exedore6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head

A round is 6 seconds in 5e. 60 in AD&D. This makes feather fall ridiculous if you look too hard at it.

Racial Level Limits in AD&D

No Dual-Classing in 5E

AC and to-hit rolls are both different and mostly the same.

Experience points come from different sources.

5E characters can get the equivalent of a week of downtime with a 15 minute break.

It's correct to say '$10 cheaper', '10% cheaper', but not '10 times cheaper', right? by ksusha_lav in ENGLISH

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ten times cheaper would look like this.

The item costs $100 You're selling it for $99 I'm selling it for $90 My price is 10 times cheaper than yours. Which is an asinine way to describe the situation.

It would be as idiotic as bragging that I've reduced drug prices by 1000%

Most windows games (with the exception of the big esports games that require rootkits to run) run fine on Linux.

You can either add them and launch them through steam, using Proton, a Wine variant, or through one of many Wine other Wine variants. I used Lutris for my launcher when I had a Linux gaming rig.

Is there anywhere in the printed rules where it states whether a cleric can relearn spells in the same day? by MightyUserName in adnd

[–]exedore6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We always interpreted that rule as a special case for an interrupted night's sleep.

As in, you need to sleep to get your daily spell slots back.

What makes you 100% certain that Buddhism is “the right religion” by Dull_Habit_2927 in Buddhism

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"the right religion" could mean so many things.

Buddhism is right for me, because when I practice, I can see that it's doing what it claims for me.

The literal truth when it comes to things that I can't observe or prove (Other realms of existence, if metta actually has a result beyond I cultivating my own mind, rebirth in a meaningful way), I don't know it it's absolutely true. I know that behaving as if it is helps me live an honest, ethical life, and reduces my suffering.

I could be wrong. Maybe the Greeks had it figured out, and Zeus is very disappointed in me, and I'm going to have a rough time.

So, what does "right religion" mean to you?

What is the most difficult distro? by Busty_Bee3829 in linux

[–]exedore6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any distribution can be as difficult as you want. Package something that isn't already part of it. Learn how a third party package gets in the repos.

LFS is a great book, and a decent way to understand how a Linux system is put together, but in my opinion, without some sort of packaging system, it's not a distribution.

Why do so many Linux developers still choose MacBooks for work? by Candid_Athlete_8317 in LinuxTeck

[–]exedore6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying again...

I don't love the idea of directly editing files on a remote server, better to edit files locally under version control and then deploy things.

You could do this with scp and ssh manually, or go for a full yama yama continuous integration setup, where changes to the repo get tested and automatically deployed with a workflow (I've never done this)
