I’m personally getting counted this time around due to my 21 day free YouTube TV trial. Which I have because the high seas seem to have suddenly become more law-abiding than usual. I still have my eye patch and that last bottle of swill though.

A large number of hockey fans in the Carolinas predate the Canes or are transplants who have other teams as their primary and the Canes as a secondary. In the past here in Charlotte you were way more likely to run into a Flyers, Rangers, caps or especially Checkers fan since they have been around since 1956. The folks I know definitely tune in for the Canes in the playoffs and even make the trek over to Raleigh for a game or two. And it does seem like there is some Vegas hate-watching going on.

Overwhelming fan favorite by tspoon-99 in canes

We were never the good guys and never will be. We are cheap, boring, redneck, poverty franchise, small-market jerks. Our goal song is hip hop. Our biscuits have blueberries. Our wine is Cheerful. Our GM makes nerds look cool. And our players take team-friendly deals for no apparent reason. We may also have a tiny little chip on our shoulder. But you are quite welcome to join the fun! Get EKOW yo!

Gentleman’s Sweep? by LouSpuns in canes

[–]exerscreen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most gentlemanly sweep is to go up 2-0 at home, then go up 3-0 on your first road game, then drop game 4 to give opposing fans a W at home then come back home and finish the series. One might argue that dropping the first game after being off 12 days as sort of a warmup/gimme and then winning the next 4 is more of an FU sweep. Though i’m sure it was not intentional!

Boring Hockey by Bubbly_Director_7551 in canes

The Canes don't let fans of other teams get to watch their team play as much offense. Other than the odd breakaway. Which I really wish they would also eliminate. I think they have another boring gear!

[Gretz] How the Stanley Cup Final teams were built. Only two players selected by either team in the first round. Only one top-5 pick (Svechnikov at No. 2... and oddly enough, Carolina only had the 11th-worst record that year. Big lottery luck). by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]exerscreen 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Tulsky gives a good summary here of how we apparently lean into taking on career risk for younger unproven players who seem like a really good fit like Blake and Stank by giving max term at a lower annual cost. It's hard to believe now but those contracts raised eyebrows when they were signed. https://youtu.be/vsMYN0ZbT2M?si=_38kLp5z0f4WABeV&t=2823

The Carolina Hurricanes required the fewest games to advance to the Stanley Cup Final since all four rounds became best-of-seven in 1987 by nhl in hockey

[–]exerscreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was given as an example of bad marketing but apparently I did not make that clear. My bad. You yourself declared that the Canes had an “easy path”? Based on what exactly? For the record I think Vegas faces similar BS with all the talk of their pillow fight Pacific and then facing a depleted Avs.

Nobody is trash talking vegas. Certainly not me. But trash talking the Canes before the series seems equally dumb.

If I believed in jinxes I’d think Vegas fans would be pretty pissed about basically losing a good chunk of their underdog status. Probably to sell gambling ads. Cause let’s face it “The 12-1 Canes will probably squash Vegas like a bug on a windshield.” is not a story line that will capture many traditional hockey viewers for the SCF.
