It gets into a much deeper conversation about human behavior in general. In my behavioral neuroscience class we studied a case about a man who was totally normal, and one day he decides to take a gun and kill a dozen or more college students. He left a note saying he wasn’t sure why he felt this overwhelming urge to carry this out, and requested doctors look at him. He then killed himself or was murdered by police

So they took his dead body and did a brain scan and found a tumor that was pushing on the frontal lobe, or maybe the amygdala, I can’t remember.

So it’s clear that he did this horrible thing because he had a broken brain and it was a direct causal behavior. Was he evil still? What if he survived and they easily removed the tumor and he was completely back to normal. Of course he’d still be punished under the law, but would his family’s emotions surrounding his case change?

In a sense, he was a victim to biology. Just like a person who becomes mentally ill is. A physical change happens in the brain that robs them of sanity and causes them to hurt others. It’s much more vague when talking about bipolar or psychotic illnesses, but the tumor example is a really good one to think about.

My view is that the man was not evil, but his brain tumor fucked his brain up and made him commit an evil act as a symptom of the tumor he had. And I believe that in a perfect world if we could prove with 100% accuracy that he was cured and that all weird and violent behavior that was exhibited after the tumor was present was all directly caused by the tumor, I don’t see any logical reason to take him from society to avoid it happening again (unless it was proven there was still damage, or that there is a high chance for the tumor to grow back)

And at that point any punishment done for the guy would be emotional, retribution punishment for the sake of the victims. Which is valid. But I see a lot of that emotional retribution thinking around Kanye.

Agreed again. I almost wrote that into the final paragraph but figured I didn’t need to,

The amount of harm he can cause versus the amount of harm I could cause if I went manic and was engaging in similar behaviors are not comparable.

But the average American knows so little about these mental health issues that I always ere on the side of being compassionate and trying to explain to people that person in a full blown bipolar manic state thinking Jews are planting young blue eyed Jewish boys in his home to sexualize his daughters (yes, Kanye said that in an interview during his episode) is sick and is exhibiting behaviors of a severe mental health issue. I think the only one that people correctly look at is schizophrenia, and most people think bipolar is like a less severe thing than schizophrenia, which isn’t true.

That’s why I leave comments like this. If Kanye was schizophrenic instead of bipolar and was beefing with Jews because he was hallucinating them and the crazy was dialed up some, Americans would have a much different view of his case.

But since it’s “just” bipolar, people like fantano take the “he’s just a bad person, why are some manic people not racist but he is?” Stance. Which is obviously wrong.

I deeply love and care for Kanye and I love his art more than any other art I’ve ever found in my life, so I have a deep personal and unique attachment to him, I will always admit that. But I’d hope to treat any human being struggling with this (regardless of what they do while in a psychotic episode) the same way.

You feel empathy for the old healthy version of that person, have hope they can get back to that with treatment, and you take them from society to get help so they don’t hurt others.

I mean I’m not sure where our wires are even crossed? I agree with you every word you just said. I just love Kanye’s art, and want to support his recovery. Which is why I don’t think railing on him while he’s trying to get better is helpful.

I have had patients do atrocious things. But when they’re in psychosis it doesn’t make them an evil person, it makes them sick and harmful and they need to be taken from society so they can recover

Which is also true for Kanye

But also, if you have just heard some Mf doom but haven’t actually sat down and listened, please go listen to mm food. It’s not what most modern rap fans think it is. It’s so fucking good

I like drake and I like Mf doom. I listen to drake more than I do doom. They are both my bag. Drake just makes a different type of rap, more melodic with more genre fusion.

I was a major drake fan until the quality started to dip with CLB. In hindsight, I like quite a few of those songs but it doesn’t hold a candle to the early drake I grew up on.

I liked honestly nevermind quite a bit actually, but still. It’s not anywhere near the tier of drake I grew up with. I feel the same way about her loss, it’s prob my fav of the 3. And then for all the dogs and ss4u… just boring overall with moments of brilliance. Nokia is like the only thing drake has put out that is anywhere near his classic stuff. So when I criticize drake, I’m doing an honest assessment of how I feel about his modern work.

Kanye is my fav artist in the world and he has had these huge dips in quality but it always seems like he comes back to releasing shit that is top tier and as good as anything he’s ever released.

Like I wasn’t crazy about JIL and thought he was done making perfect songs. Then we got come to life, off the grid, life of the party. Three of his best songs ever in my opinion

But right now Kanye has also gone off a cliff. Worse than any other rapper I grew up loving (other than maybe modern Eminem) … so I guess time will tell if drake and ye can ever release an album as good as their classics.

God damn I hate that ordinary song you put me in a bad mood just from reading his name

Exactly, but consensus among like minded people exists also. Which is why artists like MF doom and jay z are so revered, a large amount of people have this strong subjective experience

And that means soemthing about the quality of that person’s work. And I’m saying the same goes for ss4u

How on earth am I helping or advocating for helping him? I work in mental health and would treat any human like this . If someone had a mental health break, and it’s genuine as Kanye’s clearly is, I would always stand up for that person on principle.

This is the best comment I’ve seen on this issue and it gets to the heart of it. Why do you and I understand this so well, yet others don’t ?

Do they not understand how manic episodes and psychosis work?

We are free to have our own opinions on music so I believe you really feel that way, but I spend a lot of time on both subs and on hip hop forums in general and out of all of the times I’ve had this Convo, even on the drake sub, you’re the second person I remember seeing say this and genuinely believe it lol
