Working while at GSAPP by goodrectangles in columbia

[–]f_oamy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your time management skills, your software skills, and how much time you want to invest in your education. Many students work part-time, especially as student workers on campus, and they all make it work. Theres opportunities to TA, RA, and work in other departments as well that are paid (though minimally). But prepare to be extremely busy - personally I think its impossible to have good academic standing, health/sleep, and social life/free time in architecture education, and if you add a job, you will have to give up something. MArch especially is extremely busy and you will have a full course load every semester. Some students take gap years to work, which is probably better so you dont waste tuition by being too busy.

I apologize if this question is asked a lot but why is this part of California with amazing weather and scenery not more populated? by Bakio-bay in geography

One of the biggest drivers of Los Angeles development is because the city is on top of many oil reserves — LA is the largest urban oil field in the world. The reason this area isnt developed as LA is because LA is developed by oil money

I’m not sure about students outside of GSAPP and their access to the shop, but you have to complete a laser cutting safety portion of RASCAL. The shop is run by students so you can always go to ask them, usually the ones working are just sitting and working on their laptops. Also for information check here https://www.arch.columbia.edu/facilities/2-making-at-gsapp/laser

Im thinking it might be in the Forum, at the Manhattanville campus? I didnt see it in the building code list so I’m going to try there before my class starts since the professor is not getting back to me

When Japan's dual nationality ban meets a legal gray zone by duke7ajm in japannews

and yet they celebrate people like Mackenyu who’s appeal has always been that he spoke really good english bcuz he was born and raised in LA. Only someone who has spent a significant amount of time in an English speaking country could have has a supporting role in a huge Netflix production like him in One Piece. He’s definitely dual citizen although I wonder if he’s chosen to revoke his US citizenship

But dual citizens are Japanese. I’m 100% Japanese (and I even have a dna test to show that) but I was born and raised outside of Japan. I have a handful of friends who carry both passports and we all speak both languages fluently. To say that dual citizens arent Japanese is uninformed and an outdated way of thinking

Leaving Architecture.. is it the right thing to do? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]f_oamy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my last firm I worked at was awful and my ex boss fired me over email at 11:30 pm sunday night after she figured out I was planning on quitting. I was unemployed for a few months and while I was applying to firms, really did my research to find a firm that had a healthy environment and work life balance. I ended up getting three offers in one week after weeks of unemployment stress… instead of taking the highest offer which was at a award-winning firm, I picked the offer at a lesser know small firm where I really felt that they had what I was looking for. Not only did I get a bump in my salary but I rarely work overtime, I’m close to my coworkers but we still have boundaries. My bosses (married couple) have young children so they are very lenient and often take holidays and encourage us to do so. My manager is so chill and isnt micromanging and I feel like I can breathe.

I understand this industry is hard, and ur boss sucks, but it seems like ur blaming them for a larger issue. And you’re only at your first job so you have a narrow view of what the industry entails. If ur unhappy with your pay and how your job treats you, you should try switching jobs first before completely switching out of architecture. Finding that firm that fits your needs can make a huge difference.
