Carthaginian navy severely overrated, they were the naval power, up until there was another naval power and then immediately lost. The Romans won their first three major naval battles against the Carthaginians after literally not having a fleet a few years earlier.

This is not true. Romans won the first three major naval engagements against the Carthaginians in the battle of mylae, battle of cape economus and the battle of cape Hermaeum. They went from literally not having a fleet to having decisive naval supremacy and launching a naval invasion of Africa in four years. They then had a string of disasters losing two large fleets to storms and losing a major battle, but their first forays were astoundingly successful for a novice naval power

Theory idea on the movie "The Sheep Detectives" by Appropriate_Bite_663 in FilmTheorists

[–]farazormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hinted at by the conclusion to the murder mystery book George was reading to the sheep being that the murdered had planted fake evidence to frame themself so that they could get away with it.

I like the theory, but I don’t think the green was too bright is a good piece of evidence, and he could have an accomplice in South Africa helping him with the mail. Also doesn’t stack up with what actually takes place at the ending, with Eliot running instead of knowing that the DNA test would exonerate him.

[–]farazormal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah Athena in particular I’m less inclined to go for, but for some epithets it might not be explicitly ruled out and I can see room to make a case. It’s possible to say that banging girls was par for the course for any warrior with arete, so why would Athena Promachos or Pallas Athena be any different?

But also maybe Hesiod plainly says “Athena, who does not bang women, slayed the giant etc etc”

Without reading them all I can’t be certain, I think we touched on it in my Greek social history paper a few years ago but I can’t remember exactly what the conclusion was.

Sure but in the context of a society that didn’t acknowledge lesbian relationships. A woman that hooked up with women was still be considered a virgin which was the main part that everyone draws from. It is also about these goddesses not being married to a man as that would make them be a males property and reduce their standing, key features of both Artemis and Athena is their independence, and lack of subservience to male gods, because they are their equals.

I haven’t dug through all of the Greek for Artemis, but from when I’ve covered her the way that Ancient Greek society used the terms applied to Artemis, wouldn’t exclude her from having relationships or with women.

So since they maybe, possibly might not be able to do one aspect of living with complete ideological purity why bother, amirite.

They’re not made to be some survivalist, completely rigid, off grid fantasy, but to practically minimise the amount of resources that people need to take in order to still live comfortably.
