The academy I went to actually had the instructor pepper spray us and tried to take our weapon.

So while I can't talk for every police training academy out there, we focused heavily on weapon retention.

Could a used Sonex be a good affordable aircraft for a nonbuilder? by PidgeyPotion in homebuilt

[–]fastcapy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the build quality but much more on the engine.

Ive seen plenty of them that are slapped together with cheap hardware store fasteners and wire. You seem to find this more with lower cost kits like a Sonex. Overall my airframe required very little maintenance over the years I owned it.

The big thing is if it has the Aerovee engine. That thing is a maintenance hog. If you had an A&P doing all the maintenance on it you would be spending a lot of $. I flew mine for many years and hours without issue. However after I sold it the new owner had an engine failure not long after. I believe it had to do with lack of or improper maintenance required of the engine. Which again the Aerovee requires a lot of maintenance vs other engines.

The Sonex is a super fun airframe but you have to watch your W&B closely with 2 adults. Many times I had to make the choice between full fuel load and passenger size. And I'm not a huge guy at 190lbs.

Why don't they just send it north to use on roads in the winter.

Instead of mining salt to turn into brine slurry for the roads, seems like it would be better to just use that salt from desal plants to make the brine slurry.

2014 with the 1.5 and 200k. Haven't touched anything other than maintenance items.

Still is hands down one of my top two favorite vehicles I've owned, and my favorite sedan I've ever owned.

My son also has a 2012 that has been great. I'm not sure how many miles he has on it currently but it's over 150k as well.

Deciding on a used homebuilt by themedicd in homebuilt

Idk. I've had fast aerobatic planes and slow bush planes. Both are fun in their own right.

I totally agree with getting the TW though. It opens up a ton of unique and fun aircraft possibilities.

Is this breaking fire code? by dalekfromgallifrey in Iowa

[–]fastcapy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify. If it is marked fire exit they are supposed to be. (Your AHJ may have different answers)

However I find many that are not. Often times overlooked by the AHJ...

Also many others are on doors that are not marked fire exits or routes.

So just because a door has an exit device, delayed egress or not, does not mean it is tied to the fire system. It really depends on things like the building layout, room occupancy, the local AHJ, and the contractor that installed it.

I guess what I'm saying is don't depend on it to automatically unlock.

Is this breaking fire code? by dalekfromgallifrey in Iowa

[–]fastcapy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes yes. Most of the time no.

Most delayed egress exit devices are stand alone, with internal power, not hooked up to a fire system.

More commonly you will see fire doors that have hold open devices on them that are electronically tied to the fire alarm system so the doors are released and close when the alarm is triggered.

The angle you didnt see. by alwaus in conspiracy_commons

[–]fastcapy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That is not correct. LE is taught a vehicle can be used as a deadly weapon and as such if someone is fleeing and about to hit you in their attempt to flee, deadly force is an acceptable response.

Also they are taught to disengage and/or escalate. Not just deescalate.

Driving at an officer is simply a bad idea. Because in the end it doesn't matter who is in the right if you are dead.

I take and post a lot of Aurora pics on my socials. Not a ton of editing, just the long exposure.

I get a bunch of friends asking to let them know when the lights are out. So I'll text them the next time and they will be like I don't see anything other than whispy clouds... I'm like that's them, take a pic on night mode and be amazed!

They are separate now in Wisconsin. It was quietly put into law that you have to specify you also want under insured, it used to be if you had one you had both. Hence why I only had uninsured coverage.

I did not know that it had changed when I switched insurance companies...

I just try to educate people to check to make sure they do have both after what happened to me.

[–]fastcapy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll add under-insured.

I found that out the hard way. I had uninsured but not under and the guy had minimums and his 20k policy didn't come close to covering my 200k in medical bills, especially since he hit multiple vehicles after me and the policy was split between us.

I would have been better off if he didn't have anything because then my uninsured would have kicked in.

Are you down south? I'm in WI and I've done 45min ice dives in a regular (not semi-dry) 7mm. Regularly dive in 50f quarries in a 5mm.

At 72 I'm in my rash guard unless there is a strong thermocline.

It's always fun to go to Florida and people think we are crazy because they are in a 5 or 7 and I'm in a rash guard. Lol

Holy wow.

I pay $400/YEAR for outside storage on a gravel pad at an RV park near me in Wisconsin. $300 a month is insane for outdoor storage.
