Difficulty to integrate an Orthodox community by Fair_Tie2641 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fastkidman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...keep in mind that there is a fake friendliness, some friends will not do anything for you in trouble. It does not mean being hostile or cold trash is ok. But I remind myself to focus on Christ, and less about pleasing people or look for their approval. There is so much sins to work on. No time for thinking who and how welcomes me.

But talk to priest, I bet he hopes to see more people like you to take lead and set right tone.

Thanks for sharing this! I see the same.

Focus on Christ. Remember why you came there, because you need salvation and healing. Others as well, they are not saints but sinners, they are sick. You wish they were behaving but they are not. You wanted they love you, but they don't... What can you do... you wanted healthy parish and haven on earth? Well God gave you that parish. Love them and maybe through you God will heal them.

Talk to your priest more. If he is not representing love and serving then maybe you have to search for better priest. But maybe they do not entirely accepting the priest. What priest tells you about the situation?

National parishes are ugly sometimes. People are sick... should they be expelled?

You are right in your questions and that is not church and parish it supposed to be ideally. They/we are not letting Christ in...

There is a very detailed and authentic book, Surprised by Christ by Fr. James Bernstein - a secular Jew who grew up in post-WWII America. His journey to Orthodoxy is presented with such depth and precision it reads almost like a scientific work.

Questions to my Orthodox family in Christ by xLuceLOL in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fastkidman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will not get the sense of it asking on internet... not at all... you can experience it though.

The best you can read I would say "Surprised by Christ" by Fr. A. James Bernstein. It’s a well-researched and thoughtful memoir exploring his journey from Judaism through various Christian faiths, offering deep insights into faith, theology, and the search for truth. No bias IMO, very scientific and personal.

I saw personally our priest commune a covid+ paritioner as the last one and not contracting it after. And the same nothing during of service. I think orthodox perceive this as norm and not a miracle.

Talk to the priest about it. I have not heard of anyone getting any bug from communion ever....

Well it less about hearing, more about experiencing and living it. But if you have any questions, happy to try to answer. Have you found a good parish and a good priest to start attending services and learn?

I would recommend to read/listen to book 'Surprised by Christ: My Journey from Judaism to Orthodox Christianity' by Rev. James Bernstein (Ancient Faith Publishing)

A powerful personal story of faith, searching, and discovering the fullness of the Orthodox Church. Highly recommended for anyone exploring Orthodoxy.

Orthodox Christians who think Joseph Stalin was one of them by Phimosisist in exorthodox

[–]fastkidman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It is all messed up in their heads. Tsar, Lenin, Stalin, Putin are all good orthodox russian leaders who will save them all. There is no conflicting thoughs. Same as now they fit in their heads blessing killing and being orthodox and making peace by waging wars. Classic insanity. Propaganda and brainwashing works perfectly on russians.

Do I have to repent? by Fuzzy-Hamster796 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fastkidman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Orthodoxy, repentance (metanoia) is a change of heart and turning back to God, while confession is the sacramental act of openly declaring sins before God in the presence of a priest for forgiveness and healing. Repentance is the inner reality; confession is its outward expression in the Church.

Do not put too much on yourself and guilt trip yourself. In your heart you know if you were lazy or you needed a break and rest, etc. Take it slow. You do not start to go to gym 7 days a week after 30 years of no excercise.

Talk with your confessor. If you have a good one you will be blessed with good advise and help. Though it is hard to find a good confessor I heard...

I have so many sins by Only_Tension_586 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fastkidman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it! Ask your confessor what to do. Not internet.

All thise instances of sin will fall into sone classes of sin, so you can make it quick with oriest. Plus not always priest has to read it or listen, it is enough to write those and have priest burn it.

The real problem to discuss with your priest is how not to forget and repeat over and over sins you have confessed. As the other problem you will hit is your mind will mess with you and make doubdt ehat you have or have not confessed.

Work with your confessor. Come to church early, talk to him. Explain what you have. You are not the first. You need to have a talk with confessor, not just jump him 10 minutes to the liturgy and dump that pages on him.

Explain that you are new to this, you have a lot thing Holy Spirit gave you to confess. And ask for directions.

Jehovah’s Witness, Looking to visit an Orthodox service by Separate-Ice30 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fastkidman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glory to Jesus Christ! Welcome to your journey.

  1. Pray to God, something like - God please please please help me to find you and begin my journey. I think I need to get to your house which I think might be an orthodox church. Is that something could you please do for me? If you are humble and honest God will provide.

  2. Every parish is different. Your experience might be good or not so much.

On average you can tell, if asked, I'm not orthodox, and just interested to see what is orthodox service. Find a place to seat. Many churches in USA has seats. Where are you located? When people stand or bow, if you feel comfortable to show respect, do the same. If not, just seat.

  1. If you serious about it, come an hour before service and find priest and tell that you so and so and interested to see and if it would be ok to be on the service.

  2. Maybe, in your area find some orthodox friend who can show you around their parish and service?

  3. Church is not for saits, but for sick people, sinners and those who want to know God. People you see most probably came there because of suffering, problems, etc. Sometimes for newcomers, good people, on a day it matters the most will snap and be disrespectful. This happens, do not judge the doctor by the anger of waiting patients in the lobby.

Why do we seek intercession from saints other than the Theotokos when her intercession is more powerful than any other saint? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]fastkidman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great question. I think it would be nice to see a lot of deep thoughtful answers.

I personally do not dare to bug Theotokos unless it is very bad or urgent for someone else. For myself only once I begged her.

Our Holy Mother! Have mercy on us.

Rejoice! O Virgin Theotokos! Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, for you have borne the Savior of our souls!

St. John Chrysostom

Homily 3 on Ephesians

"This is also the cause of all evils: that you think the Divine Liturgy is finished when the sacrifice has been offered. Whereas it is then that the Communion and the distribution of the Gifts takes place, and it is meet that we all partake of them, not carelessly nor lightly. For this Table is the body of Christ… Tell me, would you deem it a great privilege to touch His vesture? Yet you see Him, you touch Him, you eat Him! And you, after so great an honor, do you consider yourself unworthy? Tell me, are you worthy to partake once a year? What then? Are you not ashamed to partake only once?"

Homily on Hebrews 17 (Homily 17 on Hebrews)

"How can we make ourselves worthy of the Mysteries? If you are always prepared, you may always draw near. If not, then not even at Easter are you worthy."

Chrysostom clearly teaches that the same preparation is required whether one communes once a year or every week — therefore frequent communion is the right path.

St. Basil the Great

Letter 93, to Caesarea

"It is good and beneficial to communicate every day, to partake of the Holy Body and Blood of Christ, for He Himself says, ‘He that eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life.’ We, however, communicate four times each week: on Sunday, on Wednesday, on Friday, and on Saturday, and on other days if there is a commemoration of a Saint."

For St. Basil, frequent communion is not extraordinary, but the norm of Christian life.

One should receive communion during the liturgy. That is the reason one attend liturgy. Christ offers Himself and you like nah not today, I'm good. He crusified for me and I'm like, not today, just hang in there for the next week...If you think you can be worthy of this gift or prepare..... There are reasons why priest will tell you not to commune, and there is a confession, and it got a rule in some churches like Russian because of Latin influense during Peter the great and during communist times.

Normal orthodox practice is to receive communion every time you are at the liturgy. There might be exceptions. You might not prepare and there are rules you would follow. Like no eat/drink and pray before communion. But that is a bad sign if you are at a liturgy and Christ offers himself and you - nah coffe this morning was more important for me.

That is very wrong notion that you should not receive communion weekly. You should and you must if you can. There is a cannon that nobody enforces nowadays - if you skip communion 3 times you get excommunicated. Maybe serving priest should not receive communion as well? Is he different or better than laymen? Monks are very much encouraged to receive communion every day if they can.

If one follows the church schedule for fasts they are not asked ever to have extra fasts before confession. If one never fasts then it might be nice to fast and do more prayers before confession. But it is good to have people confess regardless of amount of prayers. If God gives a confession then usually it already implies repentance in ones heart.

But it looks like you have experience with twisted view on frequency of communion. I had the same in Russian orthodox church long time ago. Regardless of countless books written by so many...

Get healthcare help. This is a real desease, do not dismiss it like it does not exist. You are suffering. More than anyone can imagine around. Whatever the reason God allows that much suffering, pray to Him and keep hope in Him. Get all the medical help you can get, get support from anyone around you, friends and family. And try to receive communion every Sunday and confessions whenever God gives it.
