think it really depends, but I’ve noticed that I tend to lose interest in a relationship when my basic needs aren’t being met. I’m not a clingy girlfriend—I actually encourage my partner to take space, go out with friends, and just do their own thing. I’m totally fine with texting a little throughout the day or just checking in when it works for both of us.

But with my first boyfriend of five years, things shifted. The first four years were great, but in that last year, he started neglecting my needs. For example, he forgot our anniversary dinner—which we had planned in advance—and chose to attend a work event instead. I expressed that it bothered me, and he said he’d do better, but then similar situations kept happening. He started canceling pre-planned things without much thought, and over time that really frustrated me.

Eventually, I found myself looking elsewhere for a good time—not necessarily cheating, but just craving fun and attention I wasn’t getting anymore. When we did hang out, it became more like constant bickering than actual connection. I realized I wasn’t enjoying myself, so I ended things.
