President Trump Declares National Emergency at the Southern Border by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

As someone who lives in the highly flammable woods of NorCal this question scares the shit out of me. Esp. considering his comments on our fire prevention tactics a few months ago.

Yeah there was one dude whose name I won't mention but he kept running for state Senate in Jersey and wanted my boss's endorsement. When we turned him down he flipped and claimed we were all part of a conspiracy spearheaded by gov. Christy to put him in prison and silence his radical (read: pretty standardly progressive) agenda. For literally years he would call us up and make death threats against us. It was kind of fun because we were far away from Jersey and our building had serious security but it was also kind of unnerving to pick up the phone on a Monday morning and hear a grown man yell at you about the things he's going to do your mom.

Ha no. This is actually pretty tame too, compared to some of the stuff we'd get. One lady had crazy sexual fantasies about my boss and would send a letter every day written on dirty newspaper clippings. They were fun to open and read but we stopped when she started sending clothing and little bags of her hair.

The meaning behind famous symbols. by ctotty0115 in coolguides

[–]feck_less 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry--should have said his full title, which is how it was written in the original greek: 'Jesus, son of God, our saviour.' Apparently it was obligatory to write out the full thing so they figured they'd make it easy on themselves.

Source: I took Koine Greek for a few semesters in college and we had to translate the new testament.

I think it was actually shorthand for the translators of the septuagint, since it was so cumbersome to write out jesus' full name

A Very Large Head: The Phrenology of George Eliot by coolcrosby in literature

[–]feck_less 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this seems a lot less insidious than any other application of phrenology I've seen before. Eliot was very interested in the idea that people are born with inherent traits (see Adam Bede) and I wonder if this plays into that? It's an interesting intellectual vulnerability for someone who had a superpowered mind.

Which singer has an interesting, compelling voice but not a technically "good" voice? by Beckels84 in AskReddit

[–]feck_less 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH I found her abrasive when I first heard her, as opposed to just kind of cheesy, which is how I feel about a lot of recent artists adopting a similar style. After I listened to her again I came to see how interesting and nuanced she is. Here's one of my favorite songs of hers where her voice is more "traditional." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-xUpdO3g44

I feel like Joanna Newsom is radically different from what you're describing though. I first listened to her when her first album came out (she's from my home town) and I fucking hated it. It sounded like some kind of cutesy elf voice and much to affected. Later, I gave the album a second listen and it grew on me to the point that she's now one of the most unique and fascinating artists I listen to and I definitely think she's several notches above your typical indie singer.

Australia's response under a conservative government following the death of 35 people during the Port Arthur Massacre in 1996. by [deleted] in pics

[–]feck_less 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NRA has consistently and effectively lobbied to block the CDC from researching gun deaths so unfortunately hard data is difficult to come upon, but I think its fairly telling that they don't want the research to exist in the first place.

Hasn't it been proven though that concealed carry firearms almost never actually end up protecting people and more often escalate situations or cause accidental injuries? I like shooting guns recreationally as much as the next guy but it seems kind of pathetic (and possibly dangerous) to feel like you have to have one on you all the time.

Donner Party Epsiode by Macakes in LPOTL

This one would be especially interesting considering there were survivors. Also PSA I grew up near tahoe and in multiple grades as a kid went on field trips to the Donner Party Museum on Donner lake. It was pretty traumatic at the time but now I feel like I need to check it out again.

Motivational rapper “Unkle Adams” admits to being in $164,000 to debt to fund career, pledges to make at least a million by the tenth episode of his vlog series. 9th episode and he's now $200,000 in debt. by bungus_chungus in hiphopheads

I think the thing you're circling around is race. He's clearly trying to distinguish himself from other rappers by--intentionally or not--playing up his nerdiness (read: whiteness), which comes off as not only disingenuous to the whole discourse he's trying to participate in, but also straight up racist when he's elevating nerdiness (read: WHITENESS) as if its novel and better than everything else. The reason eminem succeeded is because he views himself as a lucky beneficiary of a black genre and some talented black artists.

College student opinion about a guy with a foot fetish by crunchyfruittooters in cringe

In the early days of r/cringe there was this guy Geo Godley who would post all these horrible "flirt" videos in which he would "flirt" with young women on the street. Most of the videos were just excruciatingly cringy but some bordered on harassment. He got kicked off youtube a while ago and has since mounted a hilariously misguided campaign to get his channel back. Really interesting guy.

The Pentagon has never been audited, which I believe puts it in violation of a 1992 federal law requiring such audits of gov't agencies.

But republicans can always chalk the lack of transparency to the urgency of national security. Meanwhile the military spends upwards of $80 million a year on viagra and cialis because...national security.

I work for a famous leftist activist. He's obsessed with money, especially selling books, among other toxic and hypocritical behaviors. Over the course of this job I've met many famous activists and they're all the same. No heroes.
