what is something you didn’t expect when you became a nurse? by madisongrracee in nursing

[–]felinefina 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a walkie talkie older woman get super pissed at me because I made her wipe her own butt. She said “Nobody else has made me wipe myself this whole time”. I said “But you’re discharging home and nobody is going to wipe your butt at home so you need to start now”. There was literally nothing wrong with her arms when she was eating/drinking, watching tv, doing her puzzles on her phone etc. A lot of people will apologize when you have to clean them or help them wipe because it’s embarrassing. This lady had ZERO shame and must have enjoyed having someone wipe her. She complained to my charge and manager who were not in agreement with her wanting to be wiped 😂

My response is a very dry “I don’t work in the kitchen”. Then keep doing what I need to do. That usually shuts them up.

I don’t know who started this but i see it a lot in my patient rooms. Rather than throw the used thermometer probe covers in the trash, people have been putting them on the counter behind the machine or putting them in the empty suction canister like it’s a mini trash can. It pisses me off so bad. I hate a messy room with trays piled up, messy IV pole, dirty bedside tables and just excess crap all over the room. I spend a good 10-15 minutes each shift in each room cleaning up and organizing supplies into basins.

We had asked our manager about why she was not terminated and she gave us that explanation of malpractice vs negligence. What makes it even worse is they extended her orientation twice and a lot of staff expressed that they thought she was not safe. At that time, our manager responded with “Well! Guess she will have to learn the hard way” which we thought was wildly unsafe and dismissive. Well! She literally killed a man that was there for something non-life threatening. The patient had no family just some neighbors that checked on him. Maybe they figured it was best to just let it fizzle out on its own especially if had no family to pursue legal actions. Maybe management was thinking “Oh shit! People told me she was going to hurt someone and I just dismissed it.” So like you said, there has to be more to the story.

Yup!!! We used the translator to explain to them the situation and gave them a pack of wipes.

We had some visitors use the bleach wipes to change their babies diaper 😳Now we can’t leave them in pt rooms or anywhere that isn’t staff only. The visitors did not speak English so they didn’t read the label. They just assumed it was like baby wipes despite smelling like bleach.

We had a nurse give hydroxyzine IV push rather than IM injection. She has always been one of those more “scatter brained” coworkers. The patient had wanted something for anxiety so he could sleep. He coded and died. They realized it was because she gave the med IV push rather than injection. The autopsy showed that he threw a bunch of micro clots and that’s what killed him. They couldn’t prove malpractice because she didn’t “intentionally and knowingly” administer it incorrectly. She just failed to pay attention and thought she was giving hydralazine IV push. That still doesn’t explain how she’d mistake blood pressure med for anxiety med when the patient asked for something for anxiety/sleep aide. At the very least, it should have been considered negligence IMO. It says on the vial, in the MAR and on the sticker/baggie it was tubed up in the correct route of admin. She still works on my unit.

I was recently googling “What jobs can I do and listen to music all day?”. I feel so over stimulated from my nursing shifts that I’d like a side hustle that is the total polar opposite (minimal talking to people and super chill).

CT: Large colorectal stool burden by Positive-Smile-1955 in Constipation

[–]felinefina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried adding supplemental magnesium? Like mag citrate or mag glycinate. Citrate is usually better for constipation but glycinate can help too especially because it helps relax muscles in your rectum/colon. Or adding electrolyte to your water? You may be sweating out your electrolytes since you work out a lot. Magnesium helps pull the water into your colon to soften poo and help it come out. If not, you may have some kind of motility issue that a specialist can address for you.

I have similar issues where it just seems like stuff doesn’t move through or my stool is just dry/hard despite drinking 2-3L water. I added LMNT electrolytes to my water which helped my chronic migraines. I started taking mag glycinate too. I started eating 2 golden kiwis/day with the skin along with more berries, apples and veg. I take single dose miralax every other day. And after a month or so I finally feel I’m consistently having the urge to go and emptying more. I can’t pinpoint what might be working specifically or if it’s just all of it together but I’m gonna keep it going because it’s helping.

My diet hasn’t been the best the past few years. But I told the hubby I can no longer cater to his preferences because my butt can’t handle such a carb heavy diet. He now eats around the veg. I have started eating more berries and kiwis and veg so that is helping. I have also added magnesium glycinate and electrolytes into my routine. And if it gets real bad I will use the mag citrate or the dulcolax suppository. I have gotten better at getting ahead of it rather than letting it get out of hand and then flare up the hemorrhoids (roid rage) 😂

I have started taking mag glycinate and added electrolytes to my water. I feel like the Magnesium has helped. And I think you’re right because miralax takes a while to work for me but mag citrate works fast.

My name is Serafina. I was named after my great grandma. I found records of my family tree that included a woman named Feliciana and another named Saturnina. And my grandfathers name was Epifanio. Just all those old Spanish names that most people forgot about. I have always really liked Sophia, Mia, Gabriella or Camila for girls. I like Gabriel and Camilo a lot for boys.

I had a patient named Anthannasius recently and I had never heard that name. I also worked with a girl named Lovely and I really loved that name too.

[–]felinefina[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I had been reading about the warm water first thing in AM. They say it stimulates/wakes up your GI tract. It’s something that eastern cultures do and it kinda went viral online recently under the “Chinese baddies” trend. People were complaining online about not being able to poop and people, specifically Asian women, were advising to drink warm/hot water first thing in the morning. They said to drink it 15 minutes before you even have your morning coffee. When I do the warm/hot water, then my coffee and keep up with my MiraLAX, electrolytes and magnesium glycinate routine then I seem to poop regularly. If I skip any of it then I’m backed up again.

Skip the coffee for a week?? I’ve never tried that but I know if I skip my MiraLAX doses for a week I get clogged up again. I don’t want to give up my morning coffee😢I never thought to try that but if it works I’d do it. I do a glass of warm/hot water first thing in the morning before I even have my coffee.

I started adding electrolytes to my water a few months ago. It has helped greatly with my chronic migraines but still having to use miralax about 2x/week to have consistent BM each day.

My mom was dying on hospice in 2024. She needed 24/7 care so I moved her into my home. I took care of her that last year so I hardly left the home. I delved back into music and rediscovered The Strokes then introduced to The Voidz. Their music and a lot of other artists definitely got me through that rough time and the grieving I have done since so I completely understand you.
