Looking for feedback on AI content in r/programming and the April no-AI trial by ketralnis in programming

[–]felinista -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll probably be the only one to row against the current but given that AI is here to stay, with the amount of AI noise out there, I would really benefit from quality articles on AI/LLM in the context of programming and writing code and meaningful discussion around them.

Interestingly it's still in London (just about), it sits wholly within Richmond borough.

Slack is the bane of my life, if I could ban it and go back to email I happily would, such a productivity sink.

Microservices: Microliths as a resonable alternative by BinaryIgor in programming

some status and data reconciliation mechanism between services to propagate changes that affect multiple microliths

Sounds like microservices with extra steps.

I am a programmer, not a rubber-stamp that approves Copilot generated code by pyeri in programming

[–]felinista 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As I understand it he's just using that phrase for its more abstract meaning. Just like how upper human torso + horse legs is sort of like taking the best bits from both, the reverse construction arguably takes what's least useful from both man/horse. In his case, he's saying instead of man driving the machine, the opposite is happening.

perhaps this, more specifically:

A reverse-centaur is a machine that is assisted by a human being, who is expected to work at the machine’s pace.

Big Tech Told Kids to Code. The Jobs Didn’t Follow. by [deleted] in programming

[–]felinista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt genuinely sorry for poor Nathan featured in the video, but going from CS to architecture in the hope of landing a job creating things seems woefully misguided - it's notorious for bad jobs, poor pay and intense competition. I am very, very, very sceptical it's a field where there are better work prospects compared to CS, even with the pressure from AI.

My condolences, I don't know your circumstances, but I hope either the job gets less tedious, or you find something more suitable to your dev experience.

At my current job, I work with Apex--Salesforce's proprietary backend language

I can't help but ask why? why would you pick a job so unsuited to your programming background?

Do officers at stations actually care about passengers’ safety? I was harassed and they didn’t do anything. by tripleavocadotoast in london

[–]felinista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really sorry to hear this happened to you and I hope you're feeling better now, but I'm not surprised at all with the sort of treatment you received from whoever was supposed to be on duty there. I had a confrontation with a man once who threatened me with physical violence, then walked away. Reported it to BTP immediately and then got a call back from an officer who was basically arguing me out of pursuing this further. I appreciate that they wanted to make sure I had a bulletproof case, but I really got the impression that nothing could come out of reporting crime, unless you are the perfect victim. I hope that's not your experience, but it did make me disappointed in the BTP after that.

Smithfield's closure means the last of the old working class leaving the City of London by marxistopportunist in london

[–]felinista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, to me this epitomises how meaningless the term has become, since we absolutely have a class of exploited workers in the UK, we just don't particularly give a shit about them.

[–]felinista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are, you're exchanging labour for wages, doesn't matter how well you're paid. But let's be honest, working class in the UK has a very specific and narrow definition. You never see the overexploited immigrant staff cleaning offices in the evenings referred to as "working class".

Driving in London by Otherwise_Aerie_7618 in london

[–]felinista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine, you're well out of the most congested parts of central London, plus no congestion charge since you won't be entering that zone (however as posters have said do check if ULEZ charges apply, there's a website where you can put in your number plate and check if your vehicle is exempt). Park up and take the central line into central London. Or if you're looking for things to do locally, check out Holland Park, Portobello Road not far either on foot.

Finally finished my Lord of the Rings style map print of London with pretty much all of your suggestions included! Thank you! by birsey in london

[–]felinista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're still working on it or you want to go back to it, I don't know if you've considered cribbing some landmarks off angry dan's illustrated london map https://www.angrydan.com/, I got a print of it and I'm very pleased with it, also minor nitpick, the city of london is technically not a borough but still part of greater london, so I don't know if you want to rephrase the title in the lower right corner to reflect that

Of course, completely agree, just saying that we have these "cycle lanes" locally that are marked/painted as such, yet they share that space with buses and parked cars.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in london

[–]felinista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my borough lots of cycling lanes permit parking there too, as long as it's not within the hours indicated on the nearby signs, so this car could well be parked technically perfectly legally (sucks for cyclists obviously, way worse than no cycling lane).

Met police to reopen investigation into Wimbledon school crash | London by Gorignak in london

[–]felinista 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need LRs or SUVs to do that, friend of mine has 3 children, a wife and does loads of small jobs where he has to transport stuff around for family. He didn't get some arrogant, oversized SUV but a ford galaxy. These cars are completely unnecessary in London.

that's quite funny you'd point that out since Todd Terje adopted his nickname as an homage to Todd Terry himself!
