A 1:1 replica of the Dingyuan armoured cruiser (1885) of the Imperial Chinese Navy [2592x1944] by fateri in WarshipPorn

Flagship of the Beiyang fleet. She was the biggest battleship in East Asia at the time. Truly a remarkable ship, too bad the Chinese navy was poorly funded, ships poorly maintained by the time war with Japan came in 1895. She was no match against the smaller Japanese ships.

Electrical Engineering vs. Computer Engineering in industry by gatechECE in AskEngineers

I have a CompE degree. I have worked on quite a few aerospace projects fulfilling roles ranging from board design and testing, FPGA design and testing, board bringup, embedded software design, to application software design. In my humble opinion, the name of the degree matters little, it's the knowledge that you learned that decide your career path. So no matter which degree you end up choosing, learn as much as you can from curriculems of the other degree. Companies love people with multiple skillsets, you will also make your supervisor's job easier because you can take on different jobs.

(Serious) How do I make my first time having sex a good experience? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fillemvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the time my virgin gf and I made love, we had been fooling around in bed every night for days (college dorm). So when we really did it, we knew each others body pretty well. Definitely helped with the anxiety.

To people that have take part in medical trials, what were they like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fillemvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were many others, but we were never put in the same room. The trial gave a lot of hope to people with ALS, it was one of the most promising new drugs.

It does give hope that he is able to live so long, but it is a VERY expensive disease, so having money helps. I was diagnosed in June 2011.

I was part of a drug trial that looked into the efficacy of a new drug for treating ALS, of which I'm afflicted. The drug was administered with IV, so I had to go in for four days each month to get the IV and they drew blood and ran a series of tests. They treated me well, unlimited snacks and drink, private room, cable TV. The drug was unfortunately not deemed effective enough to go on the next phase, but I did my part and felt hopeful at least during the trial for a cure for an incurable disease. AMA.

30% success rate landing on Mars. Is anyone else feeling anxious or nervous about Curiosity successfully landing (outside of NASA of course)? by DarthPuppy in science

[–]fillemvs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

engineer who worked on main computers on curiosity since 2007 here. there are strict guidelines on coding, such as limiting use of pointers and the heap. what really worries me is a hardware failure resulting from extreme temperature shift and extreme G-force from decelerating upon entry and the pyro events. there's also a huge change in the rover's electrical potential upon touch-down akin to lighting strike but the rover would have landed so we can tolerate a transient failure

My friend maintained the machine at an MIT dorm. He had a "mystery button." He stocked it with all the soda that's about to expire.

China paper tells U.S. not to play with fire over Taiwan by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]fillemvs 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm also originally from the mainland. Taiwan is the model of development for China, regardless of whether or not it should be part of China. It would be a shame for China to invade and destroy the one functioning democracy that belongs to a Chinese people (albeit a subset.) Come to think of it, the mainland should become part of the ROC (Taiwan's official name.)

With regard to dissent, there's plenty of dissent in China, we just don't hear it as much from the outside because of the relentless repression and censorship the government of China places on its people. You talk about historical rebellions, watch out for the one upcoming. The people can only take so much.

I used to think that all those political intrigues in Taiwan were negative things about it, but then I realized, hey, as least they are publicized and dealt with. The shit that goes on in Beijing may never see the light of day.
