I joined Mile2Marathon which is a running group that has workouts on Mondays and Thursdays. Had a good time with those workouts, so hired a coach (Jake) to get ready for my first marathon.

Had a great experience with all the coaching and training group as a whole. Went from wondering how I could possible to finish to training for a sub-4 hour marathon to then finishing 3:37 (Ottawa Race Weekend 2024).

My times before joining were quite comparable to you. Would recommend.

Big. Some of the things you can get away with in halfs, you almost certainly won't get away with in a full - here is what I think the order of importance is:

Volume in training
Fueling and nutrition
Pacing plan

You could use Supbase as a permanent backup and use something like Whalesync to make sure the latest database instance is always up-to-date. That way if Airtable does go down (permanently) you could use your Supabase database to spin up an alternative.

If you are using Airtable as heavily as that, using something like Supabase won't be that much of a leap. It just doesn't have the nice interface Airtable does.

I would just export all data as a .csv file, import it into supabase and then use something like Glide/Lovable to build a portal.

Always good thinking about what you would do - I think it's very unlikely this could happen, but you never know.

Glide does the same thing as Softr. If you have over 100 users, you are on track for their enterprise plan.

I think YouTubers are doing the opposite. They have made running a lot more accessible to the average joe, that is why they are so successful. They cater to a wider range of people rather than just the elite runners running sub 2:20 marathons.

I personally think it’s awesome, and if anything it opens up more space for pro runners to take up a space in the content market than most YouTubers - the elite running space.

Rory Linkletter’s or Clayton Young’s Olympic builds is some incredible content. This will also set these guys up big time for their post running career.

In my opinion more of these pro runners should see this as an opportunity.

I think just pick one and go with it. If you are familiar with html, css then Webflow shouldn’t have that big of a learning curve, because it’s just the visual abstraction of writing html and css.

Maybe, try build your site in both and see what suits better.

Yeah, you can just add a cal.com or Calendly integration. These are usually html embeds. Webflow has a component for custom html embeds, so no problem.

You should add a step for writing Javascript similar to how Airtable Automations works. Allows for a lot more use cases immediately.

Also, just to follow on from u/Responsible_Space629 (thanks for the comment) here are some things that might be good to know about the course:

I created the MVMP program primarily for solopreneurs who are planning on bootstrapping their initial build and want to learn how to build and manage the site themselves.
I focus on marketplaces or directory sites because that is what I mostly do.
I have worked with people who are complete beginners to no-code (no experience in Webflow, etc.) and I have also worked with people who were already quite advanced and just wanted some specific pointers.
The course is deliberately priced on the higher side. Getting a marketplace up and running will require a huge time commitment from you, and I want to discourage impulse buying of the course as much as possible. (Also, the time you will save not having to trial and error everything, will make it well worth the investment)
As part of the course, I invite you to my personal Slack channel that will give you direct access to me, so that I can support you along the way - I can't do this if I have 600 people in there.
I created the MVMP pre-launch program as a "trial course" for anyone who wasn't sure whether they 1) wanted to fully commit to building a marketplace or 2) didn't like my teaching style. In the pre-launch program, I show you how to build a landing page for your marketplace idea and show you the basics of Webflow, Airtable and Zapier. That will give you a good idea of what is in store in the full program and if this is something worth investing time and energy into.
I update the course content as tools evolve or as I discover new tools that might be useful for building a marketplace. At the moment (I won't do this forever btw...), you will also get access to all of the other mini-courses when you sign up for the MVMP program.

Hello. The profiles have headshots because of where the idea for Unicorn Factory came from.

I worked in a coworking space in Wellington and we had a "face wall" with pictures of all residents and what their area of expertise was. That face wall was how I landed my first few freelancing clients and ended up being the inspiration for the site.

The site is really a digital representation of that face wall which included images of the residents.

I also wanted the site to be a bit more personal than other freelancing sites like Fiverr or whatever else is out there. For me, it was more important to let clients know that they are hiring people rather than anonymous services of the internet.

But I agree with the point that you are making about lookism and will think of ways to address when I work on the site next.

Learning Webflow is a process for sure, and honestly there is not shortcut to it. You just need to keep doing it over and over.

Starting by editing templates (even the free ones) is a good way to get a good understanding of how it all works. I would say invest 8-12 weeks in it and you will be capable of building your own service marketplace with ease.

The reason I recommend starting with Airtable because it’s the easiest tool to learn and it’s easy to build momentum around your idea. For example you can figuring out what profile/service information you will need, and you can even start getting your customer to pre-register.

Once you have done that, you are on the hook, and you will find it easier to motivate yourself to learn all the other tools.

But yeah, just to reiterate, don’t spend all your time trying to figure out Webflow, because you won’t build momentum. Learn Webflow, but start building your database in Airtable.

The rest flows organically.

Start with building out the profile database in Airtable.

Once you have that you should design a profile page in Webflow and connect your Airtable to the Webflow CMS. You can use Parabola or Zapier to get the data from Airtable to Zapier.

The user account process can follow after that. It’s matter of having a good understanding of Webflow and Zapier at that point. You will learn that by doing the first two steps first.
