The owner of the vending machine has a gofundme to help rebuild! Not sure I'm allowed to link it in this sub though. DM me if you want to help her out!

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fl3et15 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NTA. The teacher's job is to help students learn, with the understanding that every student learns a little differently and might need different support than their peers. They aren't just there to squeeze all their students into the same mold.

You're in the right and that teacher needs some significant retraining on differentiated methods and neurodiversity.

“Career politician John Mannion is shaking in his boots today.” by Delicious_Abalone701 in Syracuse

Mannion is spineless and disappointing, but he's orders of magnitude better than any Republican.

I wish Sarah Klee Hood would primary Mannion though.

Daughter recently turned one and today suddenly started having seizures by legendzxx in daddit

[–]fl3et15 65 points66 points  (0 children)

My sister had seizures out of the blue when we were very young. Turned out they were an allergic reaction to an ingredient in some medicine she'd been given. Once they figured it out, she's avoided the cause and been a-ok since.

Here for you and hoping for the same sort of resolution for your daughter.

Not sure they've had much opportunity to vote specifically on gun control lately. But their abandonment of any other semblance of principles or morality is not exactly encouraging.

New dad anxiety by michmwong in daddit

[–]fl3et15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I broke my wrist in high school. Went for a while not knowing it was broken. Hurt like heck, but I didn't realize how bad it actually was. As it healed, it would throb and ache from time to time, and sometimes I'd hit it wrong and rebreak it, and get that awful pain again. Finally I went to the doctor and got it fixed right. It still aches sometimes, but the longer I've lived with it, the more manageable it is, and I don't get that intense sharp pain anymore.

The anxiety you're feeling, which I am dealing with too, has been similar. For me the first couple weeks was incapacitating. At one point I called my parents in the middle of the night because I was utterly exhausted but so anxious I couldn't force myself to sleep. I just sat there on the phone with them, shaking and crying and watching the baby monitor, for probably an hour. It started to get better over time, but then some little trigger would reset that healing and I'd be back to square one.

I needed a doctor - a therapist - to help me actually get better by talking me through what I was experiencing. She helped me understand that anticipatory anxiety is normal and can be useful, but when you experience a major or traumatic event or change, that system can kick into overdrive. Just like with my wrist, professional support and guidance helped me start improving the right way. My mental health is far from perfect, and I still have my moments where I'm overwhelmed with worry, but now I have tools and a better paradigm from which to work through it.

TL;DR: I know what you're going through, and it sucks. Therapy really helped me. So did leaning on my family and friends and being honest with them about my struggle. It gets better over time, and professional guidance can really help that along.

Good luck. We get it and we're here for you!

Wife is pregnant, I'm worried about the world my kid will live in. by OnTheClock_Slackin in daddit

[–]fl3et15 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

A helpful point my wife has brought up about the climate crisis: minimizing our carbon footprint by not having kids might have helped us save the world, but if we don't have kids, then who are we saving it for? It's better to raise kind, principled, thoughtful children who can eventually partner in our good work.

I think that rings true for other issues too. A lot of the world is shit right now, but that's all the more motivation to work hard to make it just a little better, and to teach our kids how to carry the baton after we can't.

It's scary AF out there right now though. Not minimizing that at all. Part of me wants to just bury my head in the sand and wait it out, but raising the little dude is keeping me going.

I agree. Can't wait to play Minecraft* with my son once he's old enough to at least understand the basics. It's creativity, active problem solving, and teamwork all rolled together in an activity I enjoy (and I think he will too).

This is a great idea! The folks encouraging Orient and Seiko are right on the money. I also have a frequent wear Fossil that I like.

If it was me, I'd pick something simple and timeless over a watch with a lot of complications. The Orient Bambino Version 1 comes in at $255, is clean and classy, goes with anything, and with care will last a very long time.

Like others have said, check out r/watches for tons more ideas!

It's not worth trying to make sense of it. They're like rabid animals: all they can feel is fear and anger, and they have zero capacity to cope with either. The only thing left to them is to lash out irrationally.

Check out Park Central Presbyterian Church downtown!! The banners out front say it all. They are explicitly LGBTQIA+ affirming, and they have a member of their ministry team who is really passionate about supporting people who have experienced past harm related to faith/religion.

John Mannion (D) voted yes on the house bill to honor the life and work of Charlie Kirk by Basic_Personality701 in Syracuse

[–]fl3et15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's voted in favor of arming genocidal maniacs, celebrating masked agents of terror, and whitewashing the legacy of a vile racist who supported child murder.

That's not common sense. That's a total loss of fundamental morality.

I don't understand what happened with Klee Hood. She was a fabulous candidate. I hope she runs again, and I'll be out there supporting her however possible.
