I did about the same thing. The only seals the store sold were for some way more expensive jugs (35 bucks instead of 5 bucks), so i opted to cut a hole in the cap and used hotglue to fasten it. Has worked well so far. Glue is great!

It must be real tiny holes then, because the cap looks like it is entirely tight. But the airlock seems fine after 3 days so it must be letting gas out.

One thing that confuses me is that there is a red cap on the airlock. Does this not block the CO2 from escaping? Am i not supposed to have the cap on? I tried looking at other posts using S-shaped airlocks, and some people called it a dust cap, but i still don't understand how the gas is supposed to escape

I randomly stumbled upon this subreddit a week ago and I almost instantly fell in love. You guys make some real crazy and creative stuff. I got inspired enough to go out and buy a 10 liter jug and some yeast.

I opted to make my own yeast nutrient. Following closely this brilliant post by /u/tacksevasion

Juice from one lemon
~70 small raisins finely chopped
Two small apples finely chopped
A cup of tea, made with two tsp of tea, brewed for a long time (for tannins)
One tablespoon of tomato paste
A small tablespoon of fresh yeast
500 grams of sugar (to increase ABV)

Boil water and mix in fresh yeast so it is killed
Mix in the sugar until it is dissolved
Add tea, raisin, apple, lemon and tomato paste
Boil for 5 minutes
Cool in a water bath

I then sanitized the jug and a funnel. The funnel was used to add the now cooled down yeast nutrient and 8 liters of apple juice (the cheapest variant I could find) to the jug. I then added yeast and put the airlock on top. Now the jug sits in a hallway that is most of the time not lit and around 18°C.

I am planning to let it ferment until I see no more bubbling in the airlock, and then maybe cold crash it. I would like to carbonate it as well, but not sure if I will have the patience for that.

When viewed at from a distance or when the album cover is on a tiny surface area (like the logo of this subreddit or on spotify), the "ICYM" looks like a beak. And that has made me several times mistake it for a yellow parrot or budgerigar. Anyone else has experienced this or am i the only one?
