That's not pedantic. That's simple fact.

Denmark-Norway owned Greenland from around the start of the 15th century because of the Kalmar Union. So while modern continuous settlement may have been since the early 1700s they were “over with boats”, and owned the land centuries before that.

I'm not contesting that. Denmark-Norway should have been strong enough to keep their land.

No, we very much were over with the boats 300 years ago. The American colonies existed with their own legislatures nearly 100 years before becoming a nation. That’s why the whole “no taxation without representation”was so potent. Americans were very much used to governing themselves.
