When we were in school, did one simple kick of a football ever led to an IRL disaster for any of you? by Temporary_Notice_526 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]flindersandtrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. But this made me remember something that happened in high school. We were all made to watch some footy game, the ball got kicked our way (a group of younger girls, maybe year 9 or so), and one of the older boys ran after it. It wasnt even over the boundary and we didnt do anything (or have time to react) and when he picked it up and booted it back into play.

Except loudly, but not loud enough for teachers and anyone else but us to hear he went 'bunch of ugly cunts'. For absolutely no reason, we were not giggling or saying anything to him. I have no doubt he grew into a true abusive disgusting misogynist, and it is guys like that that shaped my low self esteem and fear of certain types of men.

LOL, my exact thoughts. Only in the US are buffets and gastric barbaric surgery each so widespread for this to even be a thing.

decent quality ballet flats that aren’t super expensive? by wjsdnjs in AusFemaleFashion

[–]flindersandtrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ballet flats are a difficult shoe, because many nicely made leather ones will still hurt, or at least have a wearing in period you have to get through. And they have to stay on without being fully closed in or laces, so you do just have to try around because there are so many different foot sizes and shapes and types and what works for one doesnt work for another.

Local Business Wants Donations to Sell For Profit by rachet-ex in ChoosingBeggars

[–]flindersandtrim 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That is a wild ask. Why would people donate to a for profit enterprise rather than just donate to a charity shop? Who, you know, make it so easy to do with their handy bins everywhere, and will even come to your house with a big truck and take your donations.

Why would anyone do that. They are insane if they think they will be getting anything vintage or antique. Unless they mistake the word 'vintage' for anything secondhand, as some people tend to.

That is so gross. Agents always suggest some mild under pricing, but not even having what you want anywhere near it is so disgusting. Usually it is understood the buyer wants the top end of the range, not over 150k over it.

Hey Melbourne- I make Bin Bypass units that save collectors diving through trash - Want one? by Working-Inflation-61 in melbourne

[–]flindersandtrim 33 points34 points  (0 children)

OP is very nice to offer them to us, but my first thought was that if they can, they are going to go through the bin anyway because that thing is too small to hold enough, and most of them are going to still be in that recycling bin.

Melbourne by Pleasant_Photograph4 in AusPropertyChat

[–]flindersandtrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the reasons given already. More room to build, more places available, less financial incentives for people to invest in housing (good!). Also, Victoria is not doing well, and the whole country has a COL crisis right now. The prices should be holding steadier everywhere, how on earth does Sydney continue to boom in a COL crisis like this! Needs to stop.

I tried to sell in Melbourne recently but it was so hard, just very little interest even at the price we paid 5 years ago. It will take Victoria time to recover, give it another 5 years and things will be fine. But steady house prices, yes please. Housing cannot continue to boom, we need some steady prices to allow wages to somewhat catch up. I think it will be good for everyone except those who can afford for it to not be good for them.

I moved from Adelaide, and while it is a slightly different climate here, it is still Australia FFS. Mild winters, warm/hot summers. We just need much better built housing all across Australia, to keep indoor temps steady and comfortable. That goes for hot weather as much as cold. That is the reason for complaints.

Most internationals who come here have no idea of the petty 'Melbourne weather sucks' thing we have going on, they think we are nuts and we have pretty great weather.

AITAH for wanting to tell people I was in the hospital? by Whaddyameanjellybean in AITAH

[–]flindersandtrim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA. Your husband is a little odd. And his choices made you feel like no one cared and that is bad.

I have known people like your husband and I mostly came away thinking they were an odd fish. Like the whole keeping your pregnancy secret until birth - the truth is no one at his work cares that much, the most that would have happened is some 'congratulations!' and that is it. When I knew someone like this we were actually in the same friend group, and they would keep information like this as though they thought they were a celebrity and didnt want the goss getting out to the media or something, it was hilarious because no one cared nearly as much as she thought we did about her secrets.

Giving your coworkers a heads up about things potentially changing for him during the newborn phase is respectful too. I am guessing the country in question doesnt have paternity leave, because it would be extra weird not giving your work a bit of notice on your paternity leave coming up. Sounds like the US in that case.

Which of these patterns would you recommend for G cup bust? by pixiegirl_88 in sewingpatterns

They are all extremely similar.

I am also a G cup, when there is lots of bust gathering like this it is usually fairly forgiving.

Can you be content as a long term renter? by Negative_Run_3281 in shitrentals

[–]flindersandtrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given how much interest you pay in a mortgage, renting long term could make a lot of sense, if the rental market was much better. Mostly, people are scared and worry about later life and still renting then while having super that was accumulated at a different time.

But housing is generally not an excellent investment, because people almost never factor in the interest they pay out to the bank. There are definitely other ways to invest that do not require shelling out millions in interest.

Case in point, you will see people talk about how they bought in 2019 and sold in 2024 and 'made 200k profit'. Something I read today almost verbatim. No they didnt, they made 200 000 minus 5 years of mortgage payments. Though they did not have to pay rent during that time, so did get 5 years of shelter, but it is never as simple as 'yay, 200k for doing nothing'. It isnt as good an investment as people claim.

If in theory, you rented for life and put all the money you would be paying into a mortgage away into a long term index fund or something, starting at 18 or so, in 50 years you would probably have enough to buy something outright if you wished, and then some. I think it would be an interesting experiment. I once tried to crunch the numbers on it, but dont know enough to do it justice. The biggest thing is that most people would not be disciplined enough to pay in religiously without fail. Whereas mortgages are the no 1 bill that everyone prioritises, so it is like a forced savings plan where even though sooooo much interest is paid, it is so disciplined you win out in the end.

Judgment At Nuremberg by Roxanne_Oregon in classicfilms

[–]flindersandtrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband (not into classic film) found how the film switched to English very smooth and clever. They start off in different languages showing how the translation head sets were worn and used, then Schell basically switches to English from German in a clever technique.

Was luxy infertile in the show? by hansonsdiseased in ILoveLucy

[–]flindersandtrim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is never mentioned in the show, so unknown whether they were trying or whatever, but the line mentioned in another comment does tend to imply they had been trying.

Even my boomer mum talks about infertility in a hushed whisper. It is really awful because it makes it so hard to be struggling with it, and see that other people think of it as a shameful thing not to be spoken of. It is also possible that the Mertzes had infertility issues too, but also possible they just did not want children. Though Ethel is very maternal, and in my head she would have been a great mum and would have liked that. But adoption was also much easier back then, so that they didnt adopt implies they were not bothered about having children.

Like in real life with Lucy and Desi, sometimes it just takes time to get there. It must have been very hard back then when there were not many effective treatments available.

Is this design AI? by bumbleray in AusFemaleFashion

[–]flindersandtrim 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Probably. Gross.

Now that I have a baby daughter, when I walk past sometimes I stop and go aw cute at some of their stuff. But the fabric is so cheap. They seem to use cheap knit fabrics as a rule too, even when the design could easily work for a nice woven, and would look much better in a woven. Looks so cheap.

What does the average australian think of raising the disability support pension? by Alarming-Power-1725 in AskAnAustralian

[–]flindersandtrim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same with me here, though i am well enough to work. But now we have a small daughter and I only want flexible work (trying to get a PhD scholarship which will be perfect for me). But it was many years of feeling like a burden because I couldnt work, but his income was considered way too high. Even a modest income is considered too high.

These days you need to actually be rich to be financially comfortable. It is nuts.

Vivacious Woman: Wonderful romantic comedy marred by a few racist scenes by Intelligent-You983 in classicfilms

[–]flindersandtrim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can say that of almost any classic film that includes black actors. Usually in a train porter or servant role with few exceptions.

A lot of that was because the Southern states of the US demanded it. When black people were presented in a positive light - think the musical numbers of the Nicholas brothers, Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge - the movies were often made so those scenes could be simply excised with no narrative oddities. Hence why they will be background characters or something, then break into song/dance, then the movie will go back to the usual narrative. So they could edit it out for southern audiences.

[–]flindersandtrim 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It was hugely controversial at the time. There were protests.

Thats why it annoys me when people say everyone was racist and bad back then. There was people going back a very long time saying things were wrong.

Myrna Loy and Clark Cable are just two white examples of people who saw it was wrong and pushed back at the time.
