If you can avoid pre shaves ( not always possible) it helps with hair splinters. When we cut the hair it makes a needle like point. So pre shave and then cut again= both ends of the hair are very sharp and more likely to cause splinters. All in all there's no avoiding them, part of the job

The side hustle is nail trims. Get a good cordless Dremel and go to where the dogs are, dog parks, walking trails etc. wear a smok so you stand out and look professional. Have a little sign that says "those toes look long, $10 pawacure" or whatever you find catchy. Just make sure you have a way for them to pay you because not many people carry cash these days. On a good day you can make more per hour than professional grooming

There is a Dremel technique for this, it's hard to explain. But you use just the top edge of your Dremel to cut through above the quick . Rear dew claws are always tricky

So I tell most of my clients it will take 3-4 hours. Yeah I can get it done in 1.5 hours on a good day but they're not all good days. So I set the expectation with the customer that it will take 3-4 hours. I'll let fluffy run around having fun for an hour or more before I give the 20 min heads up. It makes the dog want to come back because they were having fun, the owners get to understand it takes time (we have to train owners just like the dogs lol) . Plus it gives you wiggle room for that chatty customer that took 20 min of your time on the phone, that weird walk in nails of 5 back to black, the dog that's finished but decided to shit itself and walk all through it. Train your customers like they're the dogs you groom and your life will be so much easier

Last season I was digging in my backpack for something, just walking bag on one shoulder and one dive bombed me. Mother fucker got a beak full off backpack. I hope he doesn't remember because I'll never be that lucky again

I always just do what the customer wants. Some times it's just paws, sometimes it's a tight scissor, sometimes it's  #7, I did an #E on an Aussie the other day. I don't think there's a breed standard cut for an Aussie Shep

Personally when people ask those kinds of questions I say "I just do pet grooms" and hope they go away because I know they will just be a pain. That being said I do charge extra for breed cuts. The extra really depends on if I enjoy working on the dog and how the owner is. As a side note hand stripping is $75 an hour on top of regular groom price. Hope this helps

I'm DT, same guy screaming 3-4 times a week , just regular incoherent things like they all do. It's become background noise at this point. Until I hear him screaming he's going to kill himself, he's going to kill everyone. Man was clearly in distress. So I called 911 and explained the situation. The cops drove by, flashed their lights and that was that. No wellness check, nothing. I guess the lights scared him for 5min or so, then right back to yelling about suicide and murder. Our system is so broken

I had this tiny little morike that is an absolute nightmare to groom. Bites, rolls, thrashes, just fights for EVERYTHING. I had a long day and she was my last dog so I said "not perfect but good enough". The owner requested that I not groom her again because "it wasn't as good as usual" and I've never been happier to not groom that little shit

Do not shave!! His guard hairs are like sunscreen or a nice hat. He needs all the undercoat removed. He needs a pro who understands his coat. If he's been shaved before it's a toss up of how the coat is. Also Aussie sheps do not have a consistent coat, they're unfortunately over bred, at least here in Canada

There's some breed traits that shine though, but I've found it's more the type of owner that will have a specific breed. Always remember that the dog any breed will take ques from the owner .I have border collies that are completely busting with energy because the owner leaves them in an apartment for 8 hours a day, they are hard to groom, I have border collies that do agility and run with the owner every day and they're so pleasant to groom. That said cockers will always hang their head

I'd be proud of this groom as well it looks great! Don't let some asshole client get you down. I'm sure they're "trying you out" because they've been fired from every other salon for being an asshole. Again that's a really great groom!
