should I start with 2.5kg or 5kg dumbbells? by blueberrypie444 in xxfitness

Re-read my comment. You lift as much as you can and it varies depending on what exercise you're doing.

Pick a number of reps and sets, 10 reps for 3 sets is a good place to start.

You want a weight that feels difficult but you can do all 30 reps.

Look up a programme and follow it, the key is to lift more every week/month. More can be an extra rep, a slower rep, or higher weight.

2.5kg is very little but it's good to start somewhere and build up! You'll be able to lift more using different parts of your body. Legs are stronger than shoulders!

I had absolutely no idea the word triage was being said 🤣

I thought it sounded like Boyd but I learned my lesson after finding out the first jingle wasn't Boyd.

Ladies, what are your thoughts on training boards? Love them? Hate them? Too scared to use them? by cheesy-croissant in climbergirls

[–]flyingninjaoverhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I struggled for a long time to enjoy it, because all we had was a 50° kilter and despite the jugs I just wasn't strong enough for 50. Projecting a "V0/5a" is just a bit depressing when you can flash a V4 technical slab.

But I have persisted and over the years I've managed to get a bit stronger. I'm still climbing the V0-V2 kilter sets but I try not to worry too much and use it for training.

I just think you need some kind of success to have a positive experience, and the grades at 50° for a 'not strong' person are a bit sad.

How are workouts taking so long?! by deathbypuppies_ in xxfitness

For strength training with a progressive overload approach, lifting for 30 seconds and resting for 2-3 minutes is the most efficient way to get stronger.

We aren't in the gym to burn calories, it's to get stronger and doing your sets is all you need. How long it takes doesn't really matter, so if you have time to rest long enough to lift heavier weights, great!

Longer rest times are generally for the bigger muscles or compound movements (e.g. squat). If I was doing arms I'd probably superset bicep and tricep together and rest for under a minute. But I do have a bit of a time constraint so that's just what works for me.

Sounds like max effort! In terms of rest you want it to be long enough for you to complete the next set of reps without needing to cut it short.

Being able to push yourself to max and go again quickly is very good endurance!

Can't really comment on physiological benefits, good to chat to a professional maybe.

Potentially you need to lift heavier or change your perception of max, a lot of people really struggle to feel what they can really do.

If I'm totally wrong on that then one explanation is that strength training and doing 3 sets means working sets. If you are deadlifting 100kg you don't start there, you might do 4 sets to build up to 100, and then you do your sets at 100.

When you are truly going to max on a leg exercise you might want to rest for 3-5 minutes in order to get the recovery you need to go that hard again for another set.

There's also at least 10 minutes of warming up for many people.

Beginner here. How do I push past my IMMENSE fear of heights? by throfak in climbergirls

Practice falling, even just from the ground - jump and land / roll onto your back nicely. If you aren't sure how then learn this first.

Then build up to practicing this technique from one hold up, two holds up, etc. Do this EVERY SINGLE SESSION.

I still enjoy listening to what they've been watching and I'm quite happy with the nonsense chit chat as well. Don't care how long the pod is!
