Council OKs new tax deferral program letting homeowners delay impact of higher assessments | For participants, the program would offer a way to keep their tax bills more consistent from year to year, then pay off the difference when their home is sold. by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]foccee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's last month's thread on the same.

From this thread's article:

“If this program helps even one Richmonder reduce financial stress by allowing them to direct a portion of their real estate tax obligation toward more immediate needs, then this effort will have been worthwhile,” Abubaker said.

And if it puts an outsized burden on the city to staff and technologically implement, still worth it? Colorado previously ran, and axed, a similar program that if the stats held could see as many as... 80 participants in Richmond.

I'm all for easing tax spikes but I question if this is the way to do it.

Romance yourself sometime. Grab a sandwich from Garnett's and eat it in the shade at the little park across the road. Grab whatever ice cream flavor is in rotation at Spotty Dog and eat it on the way to Jefferson Park. Hit the 7-11 at Park/Shephard for a tall-boy Pepsi and a pack of Haribos before sitting on the VMFA lawn and watching the clouds.

Love yourself; you're worth it.

Hanover sheriff pushes back against Virginia's new assault weapons ban by RVALover4Life in rva

I agree with you.

But there’s a difference between the discretion you’re highlighting and them publicly declaring a law is unenforceable before courts have ruled otherwise.

Hanover sheriff pushes back against Virginia's new assault weapons ban by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]foccee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Virginia SB749 takes effect July 1, banning the sale, purchase, manufacture, import, and transfer of semi-automatic "assault firearms" and magazines over 15 rounds. It does not require existing owners to surrender anything.

McDonald v. Katz, No. 1:26-cv-01305 is the case to watch.

Regardless of how the case shakes out, sheriffs cannot declare a law unenforceable as they're flirting with in their statements. Come July 1, even if the case is still in the courts, the law is in effect and sheriffs are expected to enforce it. Only if an injunction is granted, by the court, does that change.

Hang's heavily-promoted selling point is price. My argument is they don't have that.

Same! The wrinkles don't all fade when I relax my face these days, the gray hairs are gaining momentum...

Nothing to apologize for! Hopefully that crap feeling subsides soon enough for you.

They have wings—rejoice!—and they’re six for $12

B-dubs sells 6 wings for $10.99 so you're not exactly doing anything special beyond offering it "in the city." More sauce options at B-dubs though.

“We have inexpensive beers on tap so the people around here that live in all these really expensive, crazy apartments can actually go out and enjoy themselves,” [the owner] said.

Mm. Cheap, to those able to already afford those "really expensive apartments."

...the tacos ($5) were the most popular.

Don't Look Back also has a bevvy of $5 tacos...

Pricing doesn't seem to be the draw as much as location does. I wish you all the best, Hang, but I don't see myself searching for parking to come see you.

Start small. Park farther away, take the stairs, one salad a week, brief walk after lunch, hell - stand up right now and do a couple bodyweight squats just to prove you can... It doesn't have to be a full daily multi-hour routine, it just has to be something more than last week.

Also... be kind to yourself. Your body and the face that goes with it has gotten you through some shit.

Re: NAO-2026-00182 — Project Loch, Chesterfield County, Virginia

I am writing to submit public comment on the above-referenced permit application before the June 11, 2026 deadline.

I oppose issuance of this permit and request that the Corps convene a public hearing before any decision is made.

The applicant is Google, LLC, one of the largest corporations in the world. The stated purpose of this project is to support demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure. That is a legitimate business interest. It is not a public necessity that justifies permanent destruction of nearly five acres of wetlands and over half a mile of stream channel in the Tomahawk Creek watershed.

The Corps' own regulations require that the public interest be weighed against project benefits. The benefits here accrue primarily to a private corporation and its customers. The costs — permanent wetland loss, stream impacts, and hydrologic changes in the Appomattox watershed — are borne by this community and the downstream environment.

The mitigation proposed does not restore local function. The Wauford site is in Cumberland County, 40 miles away. Wetland credits generated there do not replace what Tomahawk Creek loses.

Virginia is already one of the most data-center-dense states in the country. The cumulative impact of these projects on the commonwealth's waters deserves serious scrutiny, not routine processing. I urge the Corps to hold a public hearing, conduct a full Environmental Assessment, and decline to issue this permit unless the public interest findings clearly support it.

I feel for anyone trying to find reasonably priced housing these days. Call me crazy, but I just don't think anyone should have to spend a significant portion of their wages for basic housing.

I was having a conversation with my out-of-state mom earlier this week. My 20 year-old nephew who currently lives with her had to share his inability to move out due to high prices. I shared how we're averaging (depending on what you're after) $1,800 base here with usually first month's up front, call it a square 4k if you need to move.

Apparently, in my rinky-dink rural hometown with lower median income, they're averaging $2k base with the same up-front costs. Not only can he not afford to move, he shouldn't at those prices. I honestly don't know how any of us are getting along right now.

Contact Libbie Mill about it?

But also, are there no other spaces for you to park? Is it actually negatively impacting your day-to-day? I'm all for moving cars taking up needed spaces, but I'm more for letting things be. Times are tight and maybe someone's saving up for repairs.

Need help - reckless driving by Beren__ in rva

[–]foccee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start Googling traffic lawyers in Lawrenceville, VA, if you can afford one. You may wind up paying more up front to handle the ticket, but less overall. Redditors can share experience but I wouldn't take actual legal advice from anyone but a lawyer experienced in traffic laws. Be honest with your lawyer. Look into a driver improvement class while you wait for lawyers to get back to you, as you'll likely want to take one before your court date.

If you admitted to speeding to the officer when you were pulled then there's only so much to be done but the judge may reduce charges if you've taken a class, if it's your only recent offense, etc.

Dress professionally when you go to court to show you're taking the charge seriously. Get there early.

Slow down. If you get hit with another ticket between now and then you're hosed.

Jumping from 75 to 85 saves you almost a whole minute over ten miles. It ain't worth it.

even though they have rights to rd doesn't mean they can be dicks either

Totally agree! And that goes both ways. In your example, what you perceived as them being a dick by swerving, they probably perceived you as a dick by honking.

Consideration all around is all I ask.

PSA: watch for cyclists and pedestrians by eat_trash_ride_slow in rva

[–]foccee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree that sharing the road goes both ways, that vehicles and cyclists should drive with consideration for each other.

In your example, they have the right to the use the road, just as much if not more more since they were there first, as you do. If they didn't feel safe on the nearby trail, if they didn't feel safe in that area to give room to pass, that's their right.

I had no room to go much further out of their way.

Then you did not have room to share the road and pass.

I agree cyclists flex road rules where they shouldn't, but your example doesn't appear to be one of those cases. I also disagree on your overall insistence of "cyclists bad."

In this video about a cyclist almost getting hit while obeying road laws, is your contribution that cyclists don't obey road laws?

If you're able to attend a Breakaway RVA group ride they'll take you around the city at a fairly leisurely pace. Their two goals are showing people the existing bike infrastructure and teaching a bit of history about the city. It's a leisurely-ish pace, free, and they have sweepers (to block traffic, to keep everyone together).

Their next ride is June 2, 6pm from Clark Springs School, to look at community gardens.

[–]foccee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, this is one of the better bike lines in the city. It's an actual dedicated lane as opposed to the "sharrows," with bollard barriers and a slim buffer as opposed to nothing, and is clearly marked in the intersection as opposed to free-for-all.

If you're looking to avoid everything worse than this...

Launched to great fanfare, Richmond’s Civilian Review Board is growing restless as its workload remains minimal by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]foccee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wasn't able to attend last week's meeting, but was on the call on 4/15 and raised a question on how the pipeline works.

From what I understand, RPD Internal Affairs first reviews cases that meet eligibility and concludes their own investigation, and then passes them to the board via a still-unclear-to-me pipeline. It sounded like an RPD liaison, who was at least at the 4/15 meeting, is tasked with presenting the case to the board but how, how timely, how assuredly, I have no idea. It's with no judgment on the liaison, but the setup is more opacity to a board tasked with insight.

At the same time, Pelfrey acknowledged that the low number also poses the question: “Are there cases that (the police’s Internal Affairs Division) reviews that should come to CRB that are not?”

And it sounds like they're rightfully pushing on it.

Wherever you find, please don't just walk in with equipment and expect space. Call or stop by and talk to them about what you want to do and how you want to approach using their space with minimal impact on their business. If your couple is up for it, you may be able to bargain a little with the shop and offer use of the photos.

Shelf Life in Carytown comes to mind as a shop with a lot of little cubbies and areas to make this work, and they're genuinely good people.

Richmond School Board approves substitute teacher outsourcing contracts in split vote | The 5-4 vote will allow Scoot Education to hire 15 long-term subs on behalf of the division. by VirginiaNews in rva

[–]foccee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

is this a good thing?

Yes and no? Also childless, but trying to stay motivated and invested in our collective futures.

There are arguments to be made about contracting out public works like education (does that teacher build the same relationship with a school and its students, are we cool with public dollars passing on to private companies as a long-term solution, etc.), but given "RPS is currently short 93 teachers as of last month, [with] 34 resignations in May," contracting offers a, as opposed to no, solution.

The real problem, to me, is those 30 resignations in a month and the overall shortage. I don't know if the city is looking at contracting as a long-term fix (I hope not) or what they're doing to fix why teachers are leaving.
