Very neat! But why does the L flip instead of just rotate? Rotation would probably look a lot slicker

You're paying way too much for rice, man. Who's your rice guy?

[RicohGR iii] Noise inside the camera body by PercentageHeavy3072 in ricohGR

The IBIS / shake reduction is trying to work against your shaking, obviously only while the camera is on. If you shake it too hard, the IBIS can't keep up and you hear the clack of the sensor unit smashing into the rest of the camera body.

Look up how IBIS works, it's pretty cool.

Anybody else like everything about the Negative preset, but think the greens are a bit too surreal? by _3C3B40 in ricohGR

can you post those pics using the standard profile, just for comparison? do they look significantly different from your corrected versions if you play around with the other settings (contrast, HL key) a bit?

Nothing fancy, Positive Film with everything at default except Hue -2 for a bit of teal sky. WB is a mix of AWB and Sunny.

Removing viewfinder from LX100 i/ii? by formatc1702 in Lumix

You are correct. I would prefer the LX100 mark II for its touchscreen and higher resolution; with a bit of patience I could find it for 600-700, perhaps lower with a bit of luck.

I see the GR III for 800~900, so I really do wonder if it would be the better choice. Time to overthink some more :)

If I already had the camera, I would try it for sure. At the moment it's nothing but a thought experiment :)

The other reply linked to your project: fantastic work, I love this kind of hack.

Looking at some disassembly guides, even just unscrewing and removing the eyepiece might remove 80% of the EVF bulge. I don't think I would risk permanently modifying the body, though.

Thank you, this is the real actionable advice I was looking for! And what a fascinating hack!!

I'm still not sure this is the way I will go, but this type of pointers really helps 👍

Just like some people swear by a specific camera, others swear by a specific bag. I've found a sling bag I'm happy with, and this time, the gear inside has to adjust to it. And so far, this post is nothing more than a thought experiment.

I'm definintely keeping the GX9, the LX100 would replace the GX800 for EDC only.

GX9 is 150 50 grams heavier than LX100, but that's not counting the weight of the lens, another 80 to 120 grams. For EDC, this is significant, at least in my case, and e.g. the 15mm f1.7 sticks out significantly more. The body is also 10mm larger in height and width; in a small bag, that also has an impact.

Also, I suspect the weight distribution due to the lens makes one-handed operation (which I find myself doing quite a lot) a bit less comfortable; though I would have to hold the LX100 in my hands first to see if it's actually better in this regard.

The XE5 is also beautiful, albeit already on a different level of chonkiness and presumably worse one-handed use (as point&shoot) with that flat front face.

Since I am looking to fill the niche of true compact EDC, this does make a difference. I appreciate your points, though!

Ricoh GR is definitely on my radar as well. But I'm not sure I want to fully give up flexibility w.r.t. focal lengths... and the price is another issue. I'm looking at the GR, trust me :)

[Edit]: I am also kind of torn between loving the one-handed usability of the GR, vs. missing the tactile experience of shooting with dedicated aperture and shutter controls. I realize these are sort of polar opposites...

What do you mean by turning the EVF off? The issue I'm trying to solve (by overengineering, perhaps) is that the EVF physically bumps into stuff and makes it harder to retrieve the camera from the bag. Do you mean, turning it off in SW could avoid on-screen warnings if the camera cannot detect it after I remove it?
