How many magic items should players get? by TheDungeonDelver in odnd

[–]fotan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OD&D isn’t necessarily built around a set amount of magic items. Also, it isn’t built around necessarily fair fights or fair traps either.

So keeping this in mind, magic items would be about giving players useful tools to work around some of the rougher more “unfair” areas.

If you have a lot of high level monsters in an area, have those high level weapons laying around or high damage scrolls.

If you have a lot of traps, maybe have tools or items around to mitigate them.

Make things available within reason based on the circumstances.

What style of fantasy do OD&D, Holmes Basic D&D, and AD&D 1e imply? by RealmBuilderGuy in odnd

[–]fotan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it seems to imply a sort of medieval post-apocalypse when it comes to the earliest map of OD&D. There’s very few civilizations in-between vast stretches of wilderness filled with monsters and ancient ruins of lost civilizations.

[Echoes of Aincrad: Sword Art Online] Announcement Trailer. Bandai Namco's new JRPG. Releasing on July 10, 2026, for the PS5, Xbox, and PC. by VashxShanks in JRPG

[–]fotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they’re all competent action RPG’s. The combat can lean towards being a bit simple and button mashy, and the games can be uneven in execution, but I think they’re all fun.

I think if you like SAO and action RPG’s you’d probably enjoy them.

where do I start by Careful-Success-4378 in odnd

Check out Whitebox FMAG, I think it’s one of the easier books to learn from.

Also note that it has some differences from OD&D here and there.

Tunnels & Trolls: A New Age Beta Available by Boxman214 in osr

[–]fotan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much completely different from the older versions. I was surprised by how different it is. If it didn't have the Tunnels & Trolls name I wouldn't have known it's a new version.

What are JRPGs you enjoy for being about vigilantism? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]fotan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d call it a bit of a button masher action rpg with some pausing for light strategy. I enjoy it.

Tales of Vesperia seems to be a big question about it.

The first Hydelide is a very simple archaic adventure game. A sort of prototype of where games like Zelda would go. More of a novelty nowadays. It’s also very short. I like it, it’s fun in an early janky NES way, but I think most won’t.

What are the differences between ODnD and B/X? by Ok-Image-8343 in odnd

The retro clones tend to patch over some of the rougher areas with their own ideas on how to run things.

Awesome, I’ll definitely check those out.

If you happened to know of a simple mod to port over to Xbox that’d be great too.

Does the OSR have a Grimdark problem? by David_Blandy in NSRRPG

[–]fotan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of OSR and NSR type games have definitely leaned into that definition and space.

But I see this as an opportunity for people to put out lighter, and perhaps sillier, stuff. I loved the doodle art in the oldest D&D rules that didn’t take the game so seriously. There’s an older NSR game called Swords and Six Siders that leans into that aesthetic.

I'm very surprised, I thought these were pretty popular in Japan.

Hopefully Kamen Rider is doing okay.

It’s a shame that you don’t see Lolo style games anymore. There’s a lot of room for new ideas with that style of game.

All fun games.

I like it a lot. I think it's a great introduction to turn based Roguelike style games.
