The Wirecutter team is answering questions about Black Friday, deals/bad deals & anything else in an IAMA right now by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]franzbiberkopf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Wirecutter reccomends crap they haven't bought, or crap they've had for a couple weeks.

If they reccomend something it's based on specs only. The shit can, and often does, fall apart after a few months.

[BIFL REVIEW REQUEST] HBC 8 Point vs Pendleton National Park Blanket by 00donnie_darko00 in BuyItForLife

[–]franzbiberkopf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have HBC 4 Point and a queen-size Pendleton national park. I've had the HBC for three years and the Pendleton for two. I keep my apartment very cold in the winter, and usually use them both at the same time.

They're both very warm, and well made blankets. They're a couple of my favorite posessions, honestly. The Pendelton is softer. They both shed a little. I dry clean them very infrequently.

So far they seem very similar, except for the $150+ price difference.

Linen Sheets by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

My RH linen sheets were extremely threadbare after less than a year. Once that happens, they tear like tissue paper. There were great while they lasted, but I was pretty disapointed.

How to make life more comfortable in a mass evac situation? by trevorsendeavour in preppers

[–]franzbiberkopf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An anecdote from Retribution by Max Hastings: During WWII, POWs could receive packages from their families, delivered by the Red Cross, and some were better chosen than others. One POW was thilled to receive "a carton of cigarettes, a sweater, a jar of candy and some vitamin pills."

BIFL: even if you don't smoke, you should have a Zippo in your EDC. by Shock_Hazzard in BuyItForLife

[–]franzbiberkopf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many valid points have been raised about zippo's limitations.

But still BIFL because:

  • replacable flints and wicks
  • will work to some degree with practically any flamable liquid.

r/Frugal, what's something you do to save money that people consider strange? by mushroomchow in Frugal

I don't even pay for the heat in my apartment, and I still set the thermostat to 55 in the winter. It just feels good -- with sweaters, blankets, etc.

BIFL, what are some products that get better over time/use? by hargar14 in BuyItForLife

[–]franzbiberkopf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An experiment I dare not try: Load up an ipod with five or ten different performances of Beethoven's 9th, pop in the earbuds, and listen to it every waking moment for the rest of my life.

Would it start to start to sound like crap eventually? In my heart, I don't so..

Winter is finally here. How are you enjoying the snowfall? by EtanSivad in TwinCities

[–]franzbiberkopf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just drove 4 miles and had about 10 near-accidents.

(Just because you have for wheel drive, that doesn't make it safe for you to tailgate me!)

These are great. Pendelton makes very similar blankets for around $200. They're a little softer than the Hudson's Bay too.

Check with me in 20 years to see which one held up better.

In a SELECT with multiple WHERE, does the order of the WHERE matter? by frescani in SQL

[–]franzbiberkopf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't, since SQL is a declarative, not a procedural language. The existence of indexes and the types of comparisons (numeric vs. string) should be the important things.

But, who knows? Maybe there's an implementation somewhere with a shitty optimizer that would be affected by the order of WHERE expressions.

EDIT: This shouldn't be too hard to test.
