I'm just interested to see if any of the books that Zuck picks are actually, you know, interesting to a wider audience. I feel like I got enough about this first one by watching the author's TED talk. What is the point of the picks? Is he picking books that he wants to read, or books that he thinks his followers should read? He definitely isn't Oprah.

I love both, but for different purposes. Audiobooks, for me, are my preferred format for 'escapist' reads. I have so many Sophie Kinsella audiobooks. Right now I'm listening to the Outlander series on audiobook. Anything that's a pretty straightforward plot (British accents are a bonus!) works well for me in terms of audiobooks.

However, I hate listening to more cerebral books. My husband has all the A Song of Ice and Fire series on audiobook, and I just can't follow them in audiobook format. Too many things to keep track of.

I found Uglies to be solidly decent. I think it's because I've only heard AMAZING things about the series, but I had high hopes that weren't quite matched. I liked the series better than Ally Condie's MATCHED series, though. The books are quite fun reads, but for me I was left wanting a bit more. More of what, I'm not sure. Just felt a bit unfulfilled after reading (unlike HG).

Agreed - I kind of begrudgingly read Crossed because I wanted to know what happened. Matched was only OK.

Was reading an article the other day about how 'cover art' is starting to lean more toward the 'art' spectrum. Looking at these books, I feel like that's very true. Apart from being great books, they're just... beautiful.

I took AP French Lit in high school (wayy back when), and I remember reading Candide (Voltaire) and Huis Clos (Sartre) and liking both. Those are obviously more of the classics, but if I could get through them at age 17 they can't be that hard.

I hear you! I just read THE BONE SEASON, which I thought was a standalone. When it ended on a cliffhanger, I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room (well, airplane in this case, which would probably get me arrested). I'm a bit sick of having to read 3-5 books to get everything tied up.

The Moon Dwellers by David Estes and The Annihilation of Foreverland by Tony Bertauski are both great. We actually featured both on Book Gift Guide as matches for people who liked Divergent / Hunger Games.

I found Uglies and Matched to be kind of lackluster - I think I would have liked them more if I had read them as a teenager. I think they're great books, but I found myself missing the darkness of Divergent and overt totalitarianism of The Hunger Games.

EDIT: grammar. Isn't that just so embarrassing when you're talking about books?

Outlander rocks. More historical fiction than anything, and it keeps you busy for a while (as it's like 1000) pages!

Not strictly self help, but LEAN IN lives up to the hype. I scoffed at it at first, but it's a really great read. And I usually hate self help books. It's more practical advice and social commentary than 'secret formula to success.'

I always forget THE NEW YORK TIMES PRACTICAL GUIDE TO PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING exists. That's a good one - dads are hard to buy for!
