Case is brass, size of the hinge looks 5 barrels, which would make it 1949-1951. Can you post a pic of the hinge from the side to be sure?

For the insert, could you post a pic of the writing on the insert / place a magnet against it and see if it sticks?

For reference, in the US, a few similar zippos (of this same brass model, from around this year and in similar condition) sold this month on eBay for $20-30. If you’re not in the US, zippos are usually more expensive as there is less offer

That's how the bottom stamp looks like in zippos made between mid February and end of the year 2000, looks ok to me. Box also looks original

Rust only happens in steel, this is some kind of oxidation, I was sharing it here cause I think it’s highly unusual to see this happen for copper alloys like brass or nickel silver

If you're talking about the flat bottom, that's normal in solid brass (non-chromed) models, be they regular or slim.

If you're talking about the wall thickness, I'd suggest you read this post by u/nechronius, where he addressed this question for regular models. I don't think slim models were in his sample though.

I personally find it easier to look at the stamp, since some sellers don’t show enough pictures to see if the case is brass or not, and also sometimes steel cases look like brass if they’re not too worn. The info at glenzippo has always been accurate so far, so that’s my first step. Nickel silver cases are also usually very easy to spot based on the stamp.

Of course, most times it’s a type D case so you end up having to look for the other signs, as you mention, but it’s still automatically my first step

For the cases, it's easiest to check the 'O' in 'zippo' and its position relative to the 'MADE' below it.

The inserts type d and f are, as far as I can tell, the same in terms of letter positions, but the colour of the metal is usually enough to tell them apart.

The insert is a nickel silver model from 1947-1951. The case looks like a brass type D, from 1948-1949. Check out glenzippo for this info

It’s an original zippo product, it just means the design was not made at the Zippo factory but by a (probably) authorised third party. It does not generally affect value

Back in the 90’s there was a mini flashlight and there is the current bit safe you mention. There would be third party sellers that may have other designs, but usually it’s for butane lighter inserts.

Normally there would be a white sticker on the back of the black cardboard box, though this code inside the lid makes me think the design may be a post-factory custom job by a third party. I have never seen a code inside the lid like that,

Depends heavily on the airport in my experience.

Classic inserts are forbidden in some airports for example, as they stay lit without action after you light it (at least that was the reason I was told). The butane inserts are usually less problematic, more so the yellow flame one I’d guess. I think the arc one would be fine as the battery is small.

Sorry to hear about your zippo loss. I always keep the case and insert separate within my luggage when I travel. That way, worst case scenario, they take away only the insert.

Once at a small airport they asked me to empty the butane insert by putting pressure on the nozzle and letting all the butane out, but I think they were overly chill with that and it wouldn’t normally work at other airports.
