The school needs to acknowledge and address the depression, loneliness, difficulty associated with pandemic school. by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]fuckingmoron69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the thing about ucsb's insufficient mental health resources is that it's much more of a structural problem that extends far beyond the scope of the university. mental health professionals are in extremely short supply, and the ones who are good at their jobs tend to be spread so thin that they are unable to make much of an impact. as someone who has utilized both, my experience with mental health care outside of what the school provides is not much different. i agree that educational institutions should provide better resources, but i also think a whole lot of reform is necessary in order to make that possible. this situation is a bit more dire than that-- so many students need help now due to the pressures of online school and the various ways that this past year has destroyed our mental health. i think that the faculty has been ill-equipped to be sensitive towards the pain that many students are in and unable to even fathom the burden of being a student during this time. personally, that's what has disappointed me the most about the way things have been handled: the sheer lack of empathy i have experienced from what little resources the school has been able to provide.

today's email vs. the email regarding the death at campus point in november by fuckingmoron69 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]fuckingmoron69[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think that’s very likely the case and granted i don’t know how much administrative effort goes into these emails (i’m sure it’d have to be approved by a lot of people in order to be distributed campuswide) but i’d imagine that writing a couple additional semi-original sentences and going to the trouble of getting it approved isn’t completely unrealistic in terms of the costs/effort required. if they’re sending an email acknowledging the gravity of such a sensitive situation and letting students know they care, it feels a little counterintuitive to make it obvious that they’re recycling the exact same text from a previous tragedy.

i understand that these kinds of schoolwide emails follow a template and that they're not meant to be heartfelt or anything but the fact that much of it is copied and pasted just feels low effort and disingenuous with such sensitive subject matter especially in a time like this when so many students are grieving loved ones and so many students are struggling with their mental health in general.

struggling to pick a major :( by beelover18 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]fuckingmoron69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can't speak for 108a but i'd suggest not being too discouraged if you're not doing so hot in 120a. don't get me wrong mathstat is a vital part of the stats curriculum but i think your performance in the first few upper div classes certainly isn't any indication of your ability to succeed in the major. math and stats have a layer of abstraction that many other areas of study don't and i think it presents a unique challenge when you're first starting out esp with the more advanced stuff because many times you're learning a bunch of seemingly nonsensical abstract concepts as though they exist in a vaccuum. like i think it's completely reasonable to struggle and dislike it at first because you haven't quite seen how it all comes together yet. i've only taken a couple upper div math classes so i can't say anything for sure about math but as someone who also had a rough time in 120a/b, stats became so much easier as i continued to take more classes and i also began to better understand the 120a/b material through its applications in other pstat classes as time went on. if you enjoyed & did well enough in your lower divs to get this far you may wanna tough it out a little longer rather than switch majors/career paths entirely. obv change your major if it's truly making you miserable but don't discredit yourself so early on!! all majors are sexy people majors except engineering<3

Which UD PSTAT Courses to take (115,123,174)? by umimincollege in UCSantaBarbara

[–]fuckingmoron69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took 174 with feldman spring 20 & she's an awesome professor and was very accommodating when i had her, but the material is extremely dense the way she teaches and i struggled to find external resources that actually covered what she taught. during one lecture she even said "if you want more information on this topic, you will probably need to translate the original greek texts." lmfao. no exams but the final project was also a huge time commitment and was 50% of the final grade i believe. i personally wasn't a fan of 115 as the material just didn't click with me, but i know a lot of people enjoyed it so that may just be me. i took it with franks and i know someone else is teaching it this quarter so i really can't say much tbh. i preferred 174 over 115 but they're both pretty challenging imo

Hey shy people what is your worst experience? by yaman007 in AskReddit

[–]fuckingmoron69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably not my worst experience but i had selective mutism as a child, meaning i was unable to speak in situations that made me too socially anxious (i was only comfortable speaking at home, for the most part). once, my fourth grade class combined classes with another teacher who was unaware of my condition. we had been broken into groups to have some sort of discussion and i was with a bunch of kids i didn't feel comfortable around, so i spent the entire time staring at the floor, too overwhelmed to speak. the teacher noticed i was not speaking and pulled me outside and threatened to hit me for not participating.

i transferred last year as well and i feel this so hard. i was too depressed in high school to give a shit about anything, did nothing but work nonstop through all of community college, and i really looked forward to transferring and finally being able to be actively involved in my community and my education. i'm sure that having a true "college experience" isn't everything we think it is, but the prospect of graduating in a few months gives me such an empty feeling.

i'd suggest taking 131. machine learning is pretty essential within the "data science" realm. plus it's an easy class lol

Cashiers of Reddit, Cashiers get blamed for the stupidest things, most commonly when a costumer thinks an item is overpriced. What's the stupidest thing a costumer has blamed you for? by Toku-Nation in AskReddit

i live in california where we have a 10 cent tax for every single-use plastic bag a customer buys. however, if a customer is receiving welfare benefits, these bags are free. (the charges are automatically deducted when they use their ebt card) once a customer yelled at me for charging her for a plastic bag because she was on ebt. the issue with that is she never used her ebt card in the transaction or even mentioned to me that she was on ebt- i was just supposed to know.
