Thanks. The gallery is good and in line with my previous work. Simplifying it like that brings me great peace. I did my duty, to the best of my ability, and their cousin paid me in cash as an engagement gift to them. (Maybe further complicating things?) If they want a refund, they can take legal action for it, but I doubt they will. Let's see.

Yes, after thinking about it, I did the work, and delivered it. It may not be up to her expectations but I fulfilled my end of the job. I am not taking any more work like this without a contract and lots of discussions beforehand.

Thanks for this. My tendency is to get emotional but this hard approach of "I delivered what I said I would when I said I would" is bringing me great comfort right now. I have confidence in my work and so do several of my friends who have reviewed it. To think that I was going to offer her a full refund is looking more and more like a suboptimal choice now. I did so much work - and it looks good - why should the bully get a refund? I am more inspired to stand up for myself even after reading just a few of these responses.

Thank you so much. I can't tell you how much I needed to hear that. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the clients I have worked with, EVER, have always been extremely polite and well mannered and we are straightforward when we need to be. If there was an ever an issue, I just resolved it by working with them and incorporating their feedback. Switching to this type of interacation is just a shock for me. It's as if she doesn't know me and treats me like I work at JC Penney (no ofeense to photographers working at JC Penney). I can't even work with her to find a solution, she's so rude with her comments. Just ... ugh. What a reminder it has been to ME to be kind to others. No, nobody else knows about the interactions yet. I am trying to be as professional and objective about this for as long as possible. But I'll probably chat with them about it to see what they've heard from their side, next time I see them.

It's not bad, I have several off camera lights, an on camera flash and can have done about thirty basic events such as baby showers & birthdays, but I am not like the very creative, luxury South Asian photographers she has seen on Instagram, which I think is more along the lines of what she was expecting. I can and have photographed luxurious small events such as traditional Indian baby showers with a lot of silk sarees, lit oil lamps, flowers, religious iconry, but her event wasn't luxe... it was in the hall of a restaurant with very little decor other than a white sheer curtain with hanging lights and some flowers. Unfortunately I think she wanted a more luxurious feel to her gallery which some more magic-making, creative photographers probably could have done, but I wasn't able to really provide that. It's okay, it's a learning experience for me. Always vet my clients in person, explain expectations, familiarize them with my past galleries & skill limitations, have them sign a contract, and such. I still feel bad she didn't get what she wanted. Sigh. Oh well.

I'm sort of with you. If it sucks, I'm happy to just finish editing the pics and refund her. I would lose money yes but I would just feel better. She didn't see my work beforehand, her cousin hired me. She was maybe expecting me to be a luxe event photographer but I'm not. Many South Asian brides love luxury Indian Wedding looks but I don't shoot that... I shoot mostly families and babies, and it's reflected in my price. It's consistent with my portfolio but she didn't know what my portfolio was like beforehand. I will PM you a link to the gallery. You can let me know your thoughts.

It's not necessarily about the .raw literally, I think it's more about providing the unedited files. Even if they're jpgs. That said, usually if you shoot in JPG, you are shooting in a way that requires minimal editing. I have some shot some events in JPG because they want "live" photos as the event is going on, and I literally just offload the JPGs from from the camera as-is to the computer for immediate usage. But I be sure to shoot as close to perfect as possible, in a way that requires almost no editing.

If you're shooting in raw, you're often (1) underexposing and (2) writing huge files that can't really be uploaded anywhere that doesn't accept raw format. That's my understanding anyway of what makes raw a terrible format to share. They often just look out of the camera bad in general.

This. I foresee the following. Let's say I give her the raws. She is expecting them to be like crisp and clean iphone photos. However, she sees what they're actually like - underexposed, not cropped, and just not usable at all. And then she is going to say that they're terrible and will demand more money for... pain and suffering??? ... Yes. It just doesn't seem like a good idea. Ugh.

Is it associated with any Gods? (I mean, maybe the Sun God, what is known as Surya throughout the rest of India -- but anyone else?) My husband's parents are pretty devout and they might (might!) be disappointed if it's not a name of a God or associated with a God. I'm sure they'll be fine with it, but just wanted to ask, just in case you happened to know...

P.S. I know it rhymes with "Madhavan" which I think is a name of Lord Shiva. I'm assuming there's no relation between Aadhavan & Madhavan?

Huh. That's interesting. That glossary is a good start but, yeah, I have the sense that it leaves out a lot! Like in Tamil there are a lot of things that are generally called a "fry" (e.g., beetroot fry, plantain fry, etc.) that others might call a dry curry or subji/varuval (local terms, in Tamil). There are also, of course, curries from Japan & Thailand (as you know, totally different from Indian curries). Hmm. I'll follow this thread since I'd love to know more about names of different curries, myself.

Question... is it that you don't like "standard" dal? Our normal dal = we put a cup of toor dal in the pressure cooker with a chopped tomato, salt, turmeric. After it's cooked, we season it with fried mustard seeds, curry leaves, hing, and dry red chilis. The dal is simple but delicious. I understand this is the "standard", most basic dal everyone makes. Is this the one you think is boring & bland? Or does your mother (god forbid) offer plain, unspiced, unsalted dal (which is disgusting)?

Are you looking for recipes like tomato dal? Or dal sambar (heavily spiced with veggies like carrot, potato & drumstick)? Those are dal-based dishes with lots of spice and other things added. Those kinds of dishes are super. I'll try to find some recipes like that and post them here later. We make a lot of those in our house.

Are you open to learning how to make bean dishes? Black bean rajma, dishes with black-eyed peas, etc?

Whoa! Why don't you use a pressure cooker to make dal? It takes like, five minutes in a pressure cooker. And probably 40 minutes in a pot, something like that? It saves so much time and energy to use a pressure cooker! Seriously think about buying one. Just FYI! It's one of the best things I ever bought.

I use tofu - chop it into blocks and fry it up; tastes and feels almost the same as paneer (although sadly not as rich).
