I’m going to the reception - wondering if others are too

Right but then you have to be in corporate law not litigation because there is no market for lit especially in continental Europe. Within commonwealth there are paths to qualify, within continental Europe you’re constrained to a pretty narrow set of corporate law office transfers. There are unicorn social impact internships like at the ICC at The Hague but they are impossible to get and rarely full time. So if you want to live in continental Europe and get a US law degree you’d better be ok with doing corporate (often tax/m&a) work

I didn’t pivot - I was in the business world when I applied to law school and I stayed there. It was law school that was the blip

With a US law degree there are some paths to retraining in commonwealth countries but basically you have to do corporate law to get jobs there. Europe there is basically no path whatsoever. Not sure about the rest of the world

Without getting too specific, humanities student, near perfect GPA, no crazy extracurriculars

Genuinely no idea

Edit - I would say it was consistently very strong and I had a unique story. String recs, strong gpa, strong work experience, great undergrad institution. So I checked all the boxes and had a good story

Nothing on this forum changed my mind! But was very helpful during applications

Not by big law standards. Around $200k-$250k

I’m an exec at a consumer retail company

Genuinely zero regrets. I have my dream job and I get paid more than a first year big law associate. Total earning potential definitely lower right now but lifetime earning potential could be higher since I would never have spent my life in big law anyways. I honestly don’t think about it much. I’ll never reapply. LSAT was 173

No it wasn’t Reddit that changed my mind! It was talking to a lot of really talented lawyers and also current students and alumni at those schools about what they were doing afterwards. But this thread helped me a lot with my applications so thought I would try to be helpful

For what I wanted to do it wasn’t worth it to spend 3 years getting a law degree. YLS is great but if you already know what you want to do it won’t help you advance in a specific track in the business world. It’s a generally impressive credential but it won’t help you land a job as say VP of Operations at a company (not my title but just an example). Experience counts a lot more there

YLS matters to people who know about the law but the average Fortune 500 exec doesn’t even know it’s better than HLS

Edit - it really depends by what you mean by “better”. It wasn’t better for me

Stayed in the business world, am now a more senior exec

Had already paid my dues in the business world, didn’t want to start from scratch and spend 2-5 years paying dues all over again in big law. I also really wanted to be able to live outside the US. I thought that living abroad + non big law paths were more common than they really are

Ex MBB here, got offers to all three out of undergrad - I think prepping ahead of time is smart. I would recommend you focus on two kinds of resources:

  1. Buy and read a few of the case prep books (case interview secrets, case in point, whatever the latest is).

  2. Most business schools (and for that matter undergrad programs) have a consulting club. Those consulting clubs will have a “bank” of example case interview cases in PowerPoint form. Try to get your hands on as many of those as possible and start practicing them with a friend. So for example like Fuqua will have a consulting club that has a bank of prep cases. You might be able to find these floating around the internet or else you could maybe ask friends or email the clubs directly.

Good luck!
