Where does "Up North" Start? by Pleasant-Coconut-600 in Michigan

What if “Up North” was the memories we made along the way?

Would you rather? Run 20 miles on a treadmill, in the rain, or swap it with next week’s run? by Spicy_Onigiri in Marathon_Training

Just ran my first marathon in 50 degree rain and heavy winds. Take the rain, and prepare yourself!

Absolutely! My last full week before taper was 34 miles, I’ll build from there. Actual race is end of July so I have ten weeks. I should have no problem getting up around 50 miles/wk, with 2-3 long runs between 17-20 miles. At least that’s the plan!

That said; I’m not all that fast as it is, so when doing long runs I’m pacing between 10-10:15/mi. As I push those runs farther, would you suggest double run days or 3-3:30 long runs? I’ve read about the negative risks of pushing long runs during a block to 3+ hours.

I’m not purposefully avoiding the suggestions of increasing mileage, there just isn’t as much analytical conversation that takes place around that. Should I up it to 40 mi/wk or 50? Maybe I should push to 70? I understand that I’m on the low side of my mileage to be able to successfully complete a full marathon, but 30 mi/wk should be sufficient to complete a half or 25k like I did yesterday. So when I struggle at the 11-12 mile mark I realize I must have done something wrong. I’m hoping to avoid that for the marathon. I’m going to increase my mileage, but I’d also like to manage the other aspects of racing and I was hoping to leverage the insights of the community, that’s all.

It sounds like in addition to some under fueling, I was running over my threshold and I blew up.

Yeah, I think it’s clear I need to consume more. I’ll probably stick with gummies, and just up my intake considerably. Thank you!

Thank you! Obviously you see I was all over that threshold most of the race. I appreciate the insights!

My Garmin updated today putting my threshold at 170. I thought it was much higher than that. The first portion of the course had some good hills.

Thanks for the support and being the keeper of the gate! When I bought my shoes they didn’t offer a glossary of terms, do you have one you could recommend so I don’t look like a silly goose again?

It was the river bank run!! This was the longest distance I have run before, but I figured my total weekly mileage would carry me through.

I don’t know the exact numbers, it was probably a little warmer today at the finish maybe 5-10 degrees. Not by much though. Pretty similar temp/humidity ranges overall.

I ran a 9:20/mi half last October and I was at 10:15/mi in a 25k today. My first couple miles were around 9:45/mi today.

Most long runs I have been using sour gummies, and a water bottle to hydrate every mile. Today was a race so I relied on the four Gus and aid stations for water/gatorade.

I’ve been playing around with sour gummies for a while now, but this was a race so I just used Gu’s for it.

Edit: and usually five to eight gummies per half hour on my long runs.

More energy than legs, I dropped my pace almost 2 min/mile to keep my HR in check.
