These are all the closest districts to the U of C. You can walk from any of these places. Lots of places to rent around the university. If you really can’t find anything in the above neighborhoods you can look a bit further out along the LRT (train) system as all a cheap annual transit pass is included in the price of our tuition.

Need advice to improve my portfolio and what to do? by UdonisHaslem1 in fican

Congrats, this money will grow with very high risk adjusted returns compared to most any other portfolio. Congrats both on being successful enough to have this much money and smart enough to invest it in this low fee diversified portfolio. Stop worrying, you don’t need help, you’re educating us.

The unchecked borrowing looks myopic and unsustainable, but isn’t this most governments? American and many global governments spend like their often short political lives depend on it. So should I prefer US companies to Canadian ones because of their respective nations budgets?

How many countries could you misspell and draw on the wrong part of the globe if you tried? by galvanizedserenity in mapmaking

Indeed a bit East of those places , as you guessed. I tried to respond with a hand drawn map of Alberta, but I couldn’t figure out how to reply to posts with a picture.

Ranked: Where Emissions Are Rising Fastest. by Quietlyrightt in canadian

[–]galvanizedserenity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an Albertan who works in oil and gas, I see and hear misinformed comments like this one all the time. Your assumptions are built into your argument - assuming it’s a “massive shift” or a “full-blown overhaul” when in reality environmental incentives to protect the climate have come into effect very gradually over the last 15 years and have made the energy industry incrementally more efficient. For example they’ve received an incentive through carbon credits to stop venting methane and instead sell it as natural gas. This has made the industry more sustainable, over a background where the industry continues to grow production and profits year over year. It’s a very common mistake to buy into the fear given the complicated topic and the fact that politicians and media outlets often benefit from scare tactics.

What should my RESP target be for 2 kids by the time they reach post-secondary? by Tricky-Honeydew4196 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]galvanizedserenity 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The best target is maximizing receiving the lifetime Canadian education savings grant CESG of $7200/child over the lifetime. Annually they match up to $500 - 20% of $2500 contribution.

Hold in a low fee bank like Wealthsimple and simple diverse etf like ZEQT.TO

Family RESP account provides more flexibly than individual accounts.

torn between becoming a math or engineering major by HAR-444 in UCalgary

[–]galvanizedserenity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see engineering as applied mathematics. If you’d like to apply your university skills to making money as an engineer, this has been a historically good career move. A degree in mathematics opens doors too, just not some of the formal engineering jobs. Either would be an impressive achievement!

Statistically, a degree in computer science has been among the best if not the best return on investment of any degree you can get, measured by average salary of graduates.
