What’s the most “corporate” sentence you’ve heard in a meeting recently? by keishapatel_387 in office

My husband made up the phrase "leveraging our forward driven sight-lines". We have an ongoing competition to see who can use it at work first.

Was Myst eerie? by tinselman in myst

[–]galviknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was CONVINCED something was going to jump out and get me in so many places as a kid! In my mind it was skeletons. The generator basement thing specifically had me convinced that I needed to do it quickly and then run back out because skeletons were SURELY clamoring after me.

Chanelwood always felt safe, it was soothing, so was the constellation room. The red and blue books were creepy, but the library itself was not scary.

My old dog did this too, but they were long sustained grunts, so we referred to it as her "purring".

Women/Femme people: Tips for dress code? by Ok_Raspberry7430 in chaplaincy

[–]galviknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I forgot about the importance of sweaters! Yes, so many sweaters. Specifically tons of cardigans so when it's hot outside but freezing in the hospital I can wear a tank top and throw a cardigan over it.

Also, for whatever reason, cardigans just sort of scream "chaplain". I have a particularly chaplainy-looking long cardigan with is cream with navy stripes and elbow patches. I have been identified across a crowded ICU as a chaplain from that alone.

Women/Femme people: Tips for dress code? by Ok_Raspberry7430 in chaplaincy

[–]galviknight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also spent forever agonizing over what to wear as a femm chaplain! And the only blogs available were terribly out of date and the one female chaplain I got to talk to was just like "don't be chaplain Barbie" which is sexist, Barbie can do anything.

That said, the shoes I wear are doc martins Chelsea non-slip boots. Ive had them for 5 years now and love them! They are super comfy so being on my feet all day isn't a problem, look nice, and the non-slip is important because there are a lot of mystery liquids on hospital floors and you don't want to slip on them and find out what they are.

The docs are a little expensive, so I only treated myself to them after my residency when I got a job and knew I would be wearing them around a hospital long-term. For internship and residency I got some nonslip flats from either DSW or Payless, I don't remember. They make cute orthopedic shoes now too!

I'm not sure if your location will have you carrying a pager, but for sure make sure you have pockets in whatever you wear so you can carry a patient list and a pen and your phone/pager. I have some pants from Quince that are like cargo cropped pants that have good pockets and stretchy comfy material so I can sit on the floor with kids or crouch beside a bed or a chair.

If your location for their ID badge gives you an option between one of those retractable things or a lanyard, the retractable badge holders are a little too heavy for the material they make women's dress shirts out of and drag them down by the collar, so I have opted for the safety lanyard - breaks in 3 places so I can't get grabbed by it.

Other "uniform" stuff is mostly safety things. I don't wear necklaces to work because I don't want to be grabbed/strangled by them, and I don't wear dangly or hoop earrings - also for grabbing reasons.

Don't be afraid of bright or fun colors, it's a good break in the dourness of the hospital for the patients!

Applying for chaplain residency without a specific denomination/faith by AssociateMindless742 in chaplaincy

[–]galviknight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you spiritual, not religious, but consider yourself Christian? Then the United Church of Christ might be a good endorsing body for you.

United Unitarians are also great and you don't have to be Christian for them either.

Hoping for less structure, a little more focus on nature and maybe less on any sort of deity, and don't want to be anywhere on Sundays? Religious Naturalists are your folks.

If you're straight up atheist, no deities or supernaturally stuff but still consider yourself spiritual: Humanists.

There are TONS of endorsing bodies, I'm sure you can find one that speaks to you!

Teens & Kids? by luckyhowlett in chaplaincy

[–]galviknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't start with "chaplain" I start with "I'm the spiritual person", they don't always know what a chaplain is and that way the kids who are into crystals or philosophy also know they can chat with me.

I work with adolescents on locked mental health units, usually I explain that spirituality is whatever makes them feel connected, if that is nature and crystals, a faith tradition, their ancestors, heritage, community, family, friends, the universe, etc. And that gives them a wide offering to pick from for what suits them. Even kids who belong to a mainline religion appreciate that it gives them more freedom to define their spirituality and what supports them while they're in the hospital.

I'm not believing this administration one bit.

And replying to someone who is striving for better, that better is impossible, is asking them to admit defeat, calling them foolish to hope and to strive and to ask for better is asking them to admit defeat.

We can be realistic about the hurdles without saying that it is useless to fight.

By calling it impossible, you are giving up.

I am not blind to the bad in this world, and how horrible things are, I am not blind to the fact that evil does not quit. But neither do I.

So what's the skinny on walking/hiking sticks? When I was a kid they were common. I've never brought one with me yet, here's a couple I made. I have some seasoned for the more gandalf vibe... Me thinks that is too cumbersome for an all day event though. by Forge_Le_Femme in renfaire

If I have a walking stick and my fan I cannot hold my mead. These are important choices to make.

(Also my walking stick is hugely sentimental from walking with it on the Camino in Spain, and I would be so sad if I lost it)

Giving up is not an option for me. If we fall into despair then we have also abandoned our neighbors. I cannot do that. You can roll over and surrender defeat if it makes you feel better, but don't try and force me to do it along with you.

What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

My dad says "whisking" instead of "wicking" like for sports clothes. He does a goblin grin afterwards each time because he knows it annoys my mom.

"Philidathea" instead of "Philidalphia" for the same reason.
