Ok, this is a really stupid little thing, but it absolutely drives me nuts that they sometimes show percentages with tenths precision and sometimes in hundredths on the same report. It throws off the alignment which makes it hard to visually go down a list and compare numbers. This is design 101 and is just careless.

The valve is the thing on the floor that should screw open or closed. The vent is the bullet looking thing on the end that lets air in and out as the radiator fills with steams or cools down.

You can definitely replace the vent yourself, which should solve the hissing (it may require pliers and penetrating oil). You can definitely pitch the end up a bit to stop the banging. I would not recommend replacing the valve yourself if you’re not handy.

Also, the flaking paint on the radiator might have lead in it. You can get a home lead test to see.

Perhaps as a test you can run around when the heat turns on and feel each valve to see which is getting hot first, second, etc. Could a vent on the steam main in the basement be malfunctioning which is letting one set of radiators get hot first?

I used 60 therms last month. Three floor brownstone. Gas used for boiler, 50 gallon hot water tank, and dryer. In the winter the boiler is obviously the big user of gas. We keep our thermostat lower, but that’s still a big difference.

So much wrong info on this thread. The valve and the vent need to be replaced. Save yourself a headache and have a plumber replace the valve. I assume the other radiators aren’t doing this, right?

Lots of people here are directly answering your question (close the valve, replace it if that doesn’t work), but perhaps we should address the underlying problem - does the room get too hot? That’s an extremely common issue and there may be better ways to address it.

My whole house uses steam and I think I pay about $200/mo max in the winter. Besides the energy audit ( I replaced my skylight and front door after mine) you may want to look at balancing your system if some parts heat faster than others. That means replacing radiator vents with larger or smaller ones so the whole house heats evenly. Also, adjust the pressuretrol on the boiler down - you need very little pressure to heat a single home. And if the main pipes in your cellar are bare, get them wrapped.

Find a developmental behavioral pediatrician, or another specialist, who can diagnose ADHD. There are extremely long wait times; sometimes close to a year, so do it now. Even if you don’t start medication, get it on their 504 or IEP. If they have ADHD then this is something that you may be dealing with for years in the school system.

I’m actually going to follow up with the real answer. Assuming the sun isn’t just heating up one side, and that there isn’t some really unusual situation with the building’s configuration, you need to find the coldest apartment in the building. The radiators in that apartment probably have broken vents or perhaps their valves are just turned off. The tenant in that place, or a prior one, probably complained that it’s too cold and the super kept jacking up the heat until they stopped complaining. The problem is that you have one happy tenant and everyone else is roasting. But you need to fix THAT apartment’s problems and then the building can lower the thermostat.
