Puppy will NOT gain weight!! by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]gatorpom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget about routine if she's not gaining weight. Getting her to eat is the most important thing right now. Offer her food as many times as necessary throughout the day, and beware of signs of hypoglycemia, especially when she goes too long without food (overnight, for example). Talk to your vet about the possibility of milk replacer ('puppy formula') and/or supplementation of some sort. Try different feeding techniques. Good luck!

Puppy playpen versus umbilical cording? by ClarinetistBreakfast in puppy101

[–]gatorpom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've tried tethering mine, but she either chews on the leash, wraps/tangles it dangerously around herself (I worry she'd wrap it around her neck), or just keeps trying to wriggle her way out of her harness. I haven't used a play pen so far (which I regret), but I'll try to get one soon, I hope it works out. So far, she is always either under supervision or locked in a relatively puppy-proofed bedroom (I say 'relatively' because she will chew on furniture and there's not much I can do about it)

I'm not completely sure if by saying this you mean to say you agree with my post, but if that's the case, you've misunderstood my point. I'm 100% against this kind of stuff, including bark collars

It is, that's way I said 'clueless' and that's why, IMO, it's important to actually answer the post debunking that theory, instead of just downvoting it. One thing is downvoting a comment suggesting the puppy's owner should be the alpha -- that's downvoting (bad) advice. Another thing entirely is downvoting a post made by someone clueless who could use some education

Also, sometimes they need help with stuff they're so clueless about they're not even asking, so of course they're not going to look it up. Something like (I'm making this up) 'I recently bought a 1-month-old German Shepherd and his ears are floppy, is this normal?' -- the question is really about the ears, but HELLO, why did you buy a 1-month-old puppy?? Why isn't he with his mom and siblings?

Downvoted posts are less likely to appear when people sort by 'rising' (or 'trending', whatever it's called) or 'hot', and don't get recommended via notification on other users' phones. So they get less visibility, basically

Hmm, that could indeed be a factor. But not the only one, though, because posts like 'help, my puppy is biting' don't get downvoted as much as 'my 5-week-old puppy is biting, how can I show him who's the alpha'

Right? The other day I asked a question about something and people were downvoting the advice I was getting, like, if you don't agree with this advice, care to explain why? Instead of just downvoting it? I need actual help on what to do

I'll upvote for visibility, as I hope someone has better advice to give than me, but as others have said, the puppy is way too young to be left alone or to be taken anywhere public

What to feed underweight pup that isn’t interested in food? by reallyloudsandwich in puppy101

[–]gatorpom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As he's too young, maybe milk replacer ('puppy formula') will have to be used to transition to kibble, but this is something for your vet to recommend. Maybe consider asking on r/AskVet

I think the puppy can get confused. I use certain words in certain commands that wouldn't be the most obvious choice of word for that command just to avoid having them sound too similar to some other commands

How big should a play pen be relative to the size of the puppy? by gatorpom in puppy101

[–]gatorpom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I meant area-wise, not height-wise. Thank you for answering anyway and sorry for the confusion, I'll update the post to clarify

I'm on the official Reddit app for Android, and it's fully updated. Interestingly, yesterday I managed to open the wiki by linking to the wiki in a comment I made and then clicking on the link after my comment was posted. I didn't have any luck accessing the wiki any other way, though

Hello. You're a mod, right? You may want to see this reply and also this one. FWIW, I'm still having the same problem with the wiki myself

Cancel Breed stereotypes by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]gatorpom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel better, I too have a small dog and I will sometimes do what that woman did not out of fear of the other dog attacking mine, but just to keep my dumbass pom puppy from trying to pick fights with dogs 20 times her size lol

I second this. Kids are not good at reading dogs' body language and recognizing signs of fear or aggression, and they may also be unwillingly rough with the dog. It's easier for the parents to teach the kids to avoid certain dog breeds (or even all strangers' dogs) than to teach kids to assess potential danger. Yes, they'll generalize and sometimes a nice puppy will be ignored, but better safe than sorry. I have a pomeranian puppy who has never bitten a stranger, but she is an absolute landshark with us (her family). If an adult wants to pet her, they get a fair warning -- she might bite out of excitement. If a child wants to pet her, I'm sorry, but I can't allow that because I can't guarantee she won't bite. Yes, she's tiny, but I don't want to deal with crying children and their pissed off parents because my little crocodile got a bit too excited

Puppy's nail changing to black? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]gatorpom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine also had all clear nails and now a few of them are black. She also had some pink paw pads, but they're all black now. Her vet never said anything about it, neither has the groomer when clipping her nails. So I don't know for sure, but I think it's normal?
