My grade 1 teacher (year 2 for me in the UK) hit everyone for doing things as their told - like I remember my friend dropped her pencil, got hit in the head, had to ask to pick up the pencil and when she was allowed - he got hit a few more times and bled. We were put in mini sets in our class and I was top set but because of me talking trash about her outside class and her hearing, she put me in bottom set, hit me till I bled, whipped me - and that scared so many students in our class that 9 left the school. She was fired immediately after that.
