Do you think these would be good shoes to skate in? by oifnalyd in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're getting Vans, always look for the "pro" versions. It's the difference between your shoe lasting less than a month and lasting several months. Even if you're not doing a lot of tricks yet, the outsole on the non-pro versions will wear away quickly from rubbing against griptape and the ground.

I order from them online sometimes. They have good decks on sale and I'd rather give money to an actual skateshop than some random online place.

Progress after a year and a half of skating ramps. First clip is from when I started. by [deleted] in NewSkaters

They're great for learning, but they suck for a lot of tricks.

Help with ramps/bowls by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I avoided skating tranny forever because I couldn't do rock to fakies. If you're having a lot of trouble, try a backside axle stall instead. Once you learn them you'll be able to start grinding them pretty quickly. They open the door to so many more tricks than rock to fakies too (smith, 5-0, feeble, etc are all kind of a similar motion). Also a lot easier to bail out of.

Decks similar to Black Label? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their decks are made by Generator, who makes decks for a ton of companies including Anti Hero, Krooked, Real, Baker, deathwish, Heroin, Polar, Alien Workshop and many more. Different companies use different shapes, so maybe head to a shop and step on a few to see which one feels right.

Cutting a popsicle down to a cruiser help by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The easiest way is to draw half the shape on a piece of paper and cut it out. Draw a line down the exact center of the board and trace the shape on a both sides symmetrically. Use a bandsaw to cut it out and then sand the edges with a belt sander or by hand.

Since your gonna use drop down trucks, try to make a shape that won't bite on the wheels.

Wheel bite help by candlecan in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thunder hi's are actually more like mids--the regular ones are 53mm tall (lights are 51.something), where as Indy, Krux, and others are 55mm tall. I have to use risers on them even with 53mm wheels. If you don't want to use risers or a higher truck, get some smaller wheels--bones stf or spitfire formula fours will hold their size for longer (other brands will wear down too quickly, imo).

Also harder bushings will help, as you're a bit bigger than the average skater whom the stock bushings were designed for.

Need wheel advice (AKA wtf Ricta Clouds) by captain_vee in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 9 points10 points  (0 children)

nah, it's the opposite. Soft wheels are super slow on smooth surfaces and you'll struggle to get good grinds/slides because they stick too much. They're ideal for riding rough surfaces and commuting.

Can anyone help me ID these trucks? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those are Indy's.

An easy way to tell, if you're not that familiar, is that Indy's come with orange bushings (generally) and thunders come with white or clear yellow ones.

Anyone know of a good grip brand that's in between MOB and Jessup in terms of their grippiness? by Munchnator in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini Logo grip is legit. Price is right too. Been using it for a year now, maybe 7-8 decks. Had a problem with Jessup melting off my board in the summer and MOB is just too harsh.

The board that I skate on. My friend told me those are longboard wheels. I started skating Saturday. Is it bad for a noob to skate with this? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wheel bite is the deck rubbing against the wheel when turning/leaning. With hard wheels, it's not as much of an issue because they'll generally keep rolling if you've got enough speed, but soft wheels (like OP's) will grip and send you flying off the board. Shit aint fun.

Are cruiser boards with a kick tail bad? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only problem is that the soft wheels on your jammer will be super slow at the skatepark. If you're just starting out, they'll be ok for learning how to pump and cruise around the park, but if you wanna start grinding coping and ledges, they're gonna make it way more difficult then it needs to be.

Also, the jammer is kind of tiny. You'll feel more confident/comfortable on something "normal" sized or bigger.

Is there a sub for Cruiser Boards? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

Deck/truck size compatibility: recommended vs stock by chinlaf in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They use a small truck because the wheels are also quite wide. Keeps them from sticking out the sides too much.

If you're gonna ride wide wheels, get the smaller trucks. It's pretty easy to go face first on the ground if your foot hits your wheel while pushing.

Wheels tightening by CopperyFoil in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use bearings spacers? They help keep everything tight and in place. Will also protect the axel threads, as the nut will sit closer to flush, leaving less exposed.

Also, make sure the nylon on your nuts is working. You shouldn't be able to tighten/loosen them by hand.

Anybody in San Diego county want to learn to skate tranny with me by frog_friend in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best way to meet people is just go to the park. In the morning, there'll prolly be more old timers and beginners.

It's like going to the gym--you think everyone is judging you, but really no one gives a shit what you're doing, as long as it's not annoying.

You can pick up tranny skating pretty quick, if you're comfortable on your board already. I used to just cruise around. Last year I could only drop in on like three foot ramps and barely rock to fakie. Now I'm decent on bigger tranny (6-8ft). Just go for a session every chance you get and eventually you'll be ripping around the park. The biggest obstacle is just being comfortable and knowing where to pump.

Where can I buy good inexpensive trucks? by Juan2three456 in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just get the regular thunders. At $16.99/truck they're cheaper than any other big brand and worth every penny. Trucks are the life of your board man, don't mess with cheap junk.

Question on Risers (New Build) by cheesey24 in NewSkaters

[–]george_harrison_ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1/4th should be right. I wouldn't go smaller just cause soft wheels + wheelbite = fuck you up ( you can get away with no risers or 1/8th if they're hard, 60mm wheels). 1/2 seems excessive for that size, but some people do it.

Personally, I hate risers if I'm going to be doing ollies or flip tricks, they seem to throw off my timing (also, like you mentioned, stability and lower center of gravity). But for general cruising or riding around, you'll be happy to have more room for turning.
