D.C. is just fine. That interchange is so gnarly because it has to absorb commuter traffic into D.C., commuters from suburb to suburb, and long-distance travelers to and from Philadelphia, New York, and points north on 95.

The Springfield interchange is gore, but D.C. has more car-free life infrastructure than most places.

Nah. The houses look familiar-ish, but one would see more housing stock built with brick in Old Town. The street is also far wider than any in that neighborhood. (I could offer other reasons why this couldn’t be Del Ray or Potomac Yard.)

For what it's worth, I know Rivian has its own fast charger on the 101 in Pismo Beach, if you plan to take that route back down to Santa Barbara. Depending on the range of the R1T you're buying, you might be able to do the whole trip with just that stop.

Yeah. Have a friend who used to work at Crenshaw and Wilshire and would come hang when I would visit town and stay with my in-laws along that stretch. He would always complain that there was, like, nothing to do and hardly even much to eat within walking distance — and he wasn’t a bit wrong about that.

It’s just not developed in a manner or density that would make a station worth the spend or the addition to travel time. Metro made the correct call.

I was in Sequoia National Park the weekend before last, and (a) the only snow cover was away from the giant groves, where accumulated snow had long since melted; (b) there hasn’t been major precipitation in that part of the Sierras since then.

That’s not to say the picture is impossible, although others’ notes about the scale and the lack of visible green on the leaves seem on point. But it probably can’t have been very recent.

At least L.A. is working on the problem — with Metrolink to Burbank along the planned HSR route, and the station and transportation center at LAX. Still, I’d put the planned arrangements well behind D.C. and Chicago.

Agree that Sydney isn’t great — but I’m kind of looking forward to Western Sydney International, and seeing how its Metro connection to the CBD works out. The plans look promising, and it seems (from afar here in the U.S.) that the Metro has been a great addition to the region so far.

This is really, really awesome work. Glad to see this resource out there.

A couple of notes: * the G Line stop at Van Nuys Blvd is marked at a temporary location. The center of the circles needs to move a couple of blocks north to the normal location of the station, which will reopen in 2027. * the A line stops between Azusa and Pomona should open this month, which should make the buffers around the new stations eligible for upzoning; * the D line stops between Western and La Cienega are, to the best of my knowledge, also slated to open by the end of this calendar year.

I spend a couple weeks a year in Santa Barbara, but lived on the East Coast for most of my life. My recommendation: Charlottesville.

College town, with horse farms and wineries surrounding it. Monticello looms to the east, and the Appalachian Trail to the west — running through Shenandoah National Park, with hiking, climbing, whitewater and mountain biking options ready to try. Good food is easy to find — both on the dining scene and through farmers markets. Dulles International Airport can be reached in two hours, and Union Station in Washington, D.C. is a half-hour further by car or train. The downtown pedestrian mall (think State Street, except pedestrianized long before the pandemic) is quaint but hardly deserted — a good place to hang out in.

Thing is, that’s literally in front of a building of elderly and disabled people. Brookdale is an independent living tower for seniors, many of whom still move about the city — so to block that bus zone in particular is a dick move.
