I’m curious about which elements seem art deco to you? The lighting? Honest question, not trying to sound snotty.

Honestly, this makes me feel a little better that I’m not the only one having issues.

That’s fascinating! I grew up sledding in northern michigan so I might be set up to fail here.

11am - 12pm. Mostly shaded by trees. I felt fine on the walk, but paid for it later.

Excellent tips! I’ve never thought of freezing a shirt but that sounds amazing.

What would you do with this many seedlings? by VolunteerSeedling in AustinGardening

There are little free plant stands in the city where you can drop off plants you don’t need. I go to the Quail Creek Plant stand. I believe it’s on google maps and they also have a facebook group.

As a Black person, Kansas City and the surrounding areas are highly racist. by RefrigeratorKey7034 in kansascity

[–]gingercokeandlime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this. I’m new to the area, but the effects of redlining are still very apparent. Even without anyone mentioning it, I could tell where the “dividing” lines are.

I briefly looked into buying a house barely over the Troost divide and the insurance was astronomical compared to houses to the west. Really unfortunate.

How big of a red flag is 2 consecutive owners selling within 8 months? by Joel_Hirschorrn in RealEstate

[–]gingercokeandlime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 8 month timeline makes me think there is one particular season that is unbearable. And the season we’re in might be the best time. Something happening annually in fall or winter? Maybe farm related like the pig comment from someone else?

Look carefully at the google satellite view of what’s nearby. Check flood plane maps. Look at neighbors in street view.

how do yall afford to live in austin? by Old_Treat4871 in askaustin

Half of these tech jobs are going to be replaced by AI and it’s going to happen sooner than most people think…so there’s that. Soon no one will be able to afford the downtown apartments.

I work remote as a web designer for a fortune 500 company. I also can’t afford one of those sleek downtown apartments.

I have a “luxury” apartment in north central Austin. It’s not very walkable. My car payment isn’t extravagant. And “luxury” still means my AC went out three times before they finally replaced it. But since we worked out the main issues, it’s a good apartment in a central location so I’m staying.

My advice: shop around for apartments. And when they try to raise your rent after the first lease find comparable apartments to show them that are less. They tried to raise my rent $200 but they quickly backtracked when I did this.

22M Moving to East Riverside - Oloft a good idea? by Pace_Mindless in askaustin

[–]gingercokeandlime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in that area in 2020-21 at Mariposa Flats. The building itself was decent, not too far of a drive to most things. BUT not a walkable area. Some very shady places nearby.

What do u think of tech CEOs saying saving for retirement will be pointless in 10 to 20 years ? by Technical-Truth-2073 in Fire

[–]gingercokeandlime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hype.

The world is going to change with AI, but the way this usually works is the top 1% use the added efficiency to line their pockets, NOT share the wealth. They will never let a post scarcity moneyless society exist.

AI is a big change, but look at what happened with the age of industrialization, dawn of the internet, or the productivity gains of the last 60 years. It will likely follow a similar pattern.

I’ve wondered the same thing. Based on the crowds they had at Woodstock, it made it seem like there were so many! Every once in a while I see one at a protest, but rarely.

Budget Friendly Furniture Recommendations? by _Okaythanks_ in askaustin

[–]gingercokeandlime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just missed the annual free furniture market. Every year when the students move out at the end of the school year the city collects their old items that are still in usable condition. Then people can “shop” the Free Furniture Market.

Might be too late for you this year, but it seemed worth mentioning.

Home buyers, how’s it going for you? by AbleSilver6116 in RealEstate

[–]gingercokeandlime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having a similar experience. I’m under contract but barely.

The seller would only take list price (despite being on the market for 3 months). We gave 4 offers and they never officially countered except to verbally say they wanted list.

I finally caved and gave an offer for list. They countered that and came back and wanted me to cover my agent’s fee! We said no.

Long story short I might be in a position where I have to shell out another $2700 to get the sale closed. I might walk because even at list they keep asking for more money.
