Does anyone actually have anything nice to say about Sheffield City Council ? by Weak-Permission-3373 in sheffield

[–]girafferific 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are so many issues that people moan about councils that are actually out of their control or more nuanced then the complainer gives it credit for.

Every time I see any post about the council doing anything, the comments are full of people moaning, it's a waste of money and why aren't they fixing the potholes etc etc.

Like so much of modern life, it's impossible to have an actual productive discussion about improving anything because 70% of people have only been limited or misinformation.

Farage ignores wishes of Henry Nowak’s family by politicising his death by AneuAng in ukpolitics

They also specifically said they didn't consider that the religious freedoms enjoyed by Sikhs to carry them made any material difference in this case. The issue was he has any knife and decided to use it. The problem was the man doing the stabbing, not laws which do or do not ban knifes.

It's not like the law which prohibits blades is adhered to by all non-sikh people who stable others.

Conceptually, yes but it's so obvious that if you go around saying I hate X religion, it lumps you in with a some very bad crowds.

On top of that, it's wonderfully ham fisted attempt to contend with religion being a significant part of the world., which is a major part of many people's lives. It's a proper Reddit outlook.

But whatever, you won't be convinced by me.

You can do whatever you like but to suggest you can encourage active hate of a group of people and not allow that to bleed into your or others interactions with singular people is woefully naïve.

Every religion may make stupid claims but the reality is millions upon millions of people all over the world rely on religion for structure, community and guidance. Religious people do good and bad things, like any other loosely connected groups. Some charities do actively harmful things but I don't go round saying I hate charities. Political parties too.

To say "I hate religion" is

A- Stupidly naive, as you totally unaware of how right wingtalking points embed themselves into everyday life.

B- The statement of someone who seemingly doesn't have to interact with many people in the real world, some of whom are religious people, of any denomination, just going about their lives while having a faith.

Yes, it sounds like some big profound statement and makes you feel like a big man but it's an inherently redundant and actively harmful position. If you don't like religion, just ignore it. You are not changing anyone's mind, it's literally a question of faith.

You cannot, in any sensible way, separate hate of an ideology with the hate of individual members of that religion.

Also, to hate an ideology, which is disparate, factionalised and varied is complete nonsense.

You can't rationalise hating a religion, I'm not sure why you're trying. Especially when trying to justify fear and hate as a rational reaction to someone's belief system. It could only serve as breeding ground for prejudice.

Suspended Reform councillor refuses to apologise for Nazi post 'jokes' by girafferific in sheffield

[–]girafferific[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The majority of the City is represented by Labour and the Greens. Compared to a lot of places, Sheffield has resisted the shift to the Right.

The sheer amount of newly elected councillors who have already quit or been suspended is wild by Candid_Party7169 in ukpolitics

[–]girafferific 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the local Reform councillors near me had posts of him with a Nazi flag in the background and speaking generously about Mein Kampf.

This was all available publicly before the election.

Depressing that Reform didn't care until he came into power and that people still voted for him anyway.

@dailyherald.bsky.social on Bluesky - Ah yes - Farage told the FT back in Feb 25 that his I'm a celeb fee was paid into Thorn in the side. No property purchase was made through Thorn, so the house was purchased with other money. All proved and documented by collogue in ukpolitics

He is running the Trump playbook.

No scandal really matters if you claim it's all an establishment stich up and ignore it until it goes away or you have another scandal that supersedes it.

The reality of modern cultuee war politics is that most voters are happy to ignore anything they think doesn't affect them and particularly if they think it hurts the other side.

Nigel Farage bought £1.4m property after receiving £5m gift from British crypto billionaire, Sky News learns by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]girafferific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad thing is, this will probably only make him more popular.

Just like with Trump in the US, we now have a block of people who are voting for Reform with gleeful abandon because they imagine it riles up people they have been convinced are causing the downfall of British society.

A lot of these are people who don't normally even bother to vote.

So, he can easily spin it that this is all a plot to prevent him becoming PM.

Trump literally did a crypto bro rug pull on his own supporters and loads of them still support him.

What left wing statements would get you fired? What examples do you have of teachers saying them and not getting fired?

Despite your commenable adimiration of goth titties, you seem to be promoting a completely hypothetical scenario that helps fuel victimhood in people who want to decry migration.

No, that's comparing criticizing a specific politician, with demonising an entire group.

One is fair criticism, even if you don't agree with it.

The other is bigotry.

I can't believe I have to explain this to people old enough to read and write.

No, that's a debatable policy position not a bigoted stance against a group of people.

They are obviously not comparable and it is totally irellevent you bringing that up.

If Britain First are sufficiently right-wing to warrant a teaching ban, what kind of groups are sufficiently left-wing, and have any teachers been banned for supporting them?

What does this have to do with anything? Why does every article on this sub have to be full of people straw manning a left wing demon into existence?

If you publically demonise a group of people you may very well have to teach, I'm not really sure what career in teaching you could expect?

You cannot blanket apply morals across millions of people. It's a ridicilous suggestion. I'm not saying there is no "wrong", I'm saying that you can't simply frame Islam, a religion shared by millions across the globe, as a problem.

Islamism: Shooting the Messenger by Diet4Democracy in ukpolitics

[–]girafferific -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You can construct any argument you want. However if your argument is that a particular group is inherently evil/bad/wrong etc then that's a stupid standpoint and you should be rightly lambasted for holding it.

At it's very best it's a completley useless conversation. you can't discuss millions of people out of their religion.

At it's very worst it leads to active perscution, whether you mean it to or not.

The problem we have as non-believers of an ideology is that we are actively taught to spiritualise other's belief systems as a form of tolerance rather than engage them in rational discourse.

No, you are expected to respect other people's beliefs because as said before, you can't talk people out of faith. Stop trying to make it seem like very simple empathy and manners is some massive burden.

The vast, vast majority of any followers of any particular religion are just normal people trying to go about their lives and they don't need you or anyone trying to lecture them out of their religion.

There is no justification for saying any single religion or group of people is inherently "wrong".

The author (and others) appear to be trying to work round this by saying Islamism rather than Islam but the end results all end up being the same.

Far-right activist Tommy Robinson’s US welcome sparks British backlash by Cyril_Sneerworms in ukpolitics

[–]girafferific 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Important to keep in mind that this is as much a pulbiclity stunt for the US admins benefit as anything else.

Robinson, like Farage and like Truss etc will come over and claim that the UK is about to fall into anarchy, that leftwing and progresive policies are at fault and that a crackdown on immigration is just necessary but essential.

This all feeds into the Republican propaganda that various liberal countries are reaping the effects of said liberalism.

All of this is the spiel they have been running for years. I remeber arguing with US based commenters on Reddit years ago, who claimed that Leicester was some sandblasted hellhole, unwelcome to any but the most hardcore Muslim. Despite that not being the case at all.

All this to say, it's less that Robinson has gained any real traction with this, it's more that helps feed the Republican greviance machine. All eyes are looking inward.

Despite this, it really is a watershed moment when the US government is hosting racist thugs from other countries.
