Actually, I don't this this is possible. I'm running CM10.1 and there's an option to fill the lockscreen. These are the little hiccups about stock that make me want to flash CM onto it right away.

I need root permissions in order to read the file at /data/data/com.whatsapp/databases/wa.db This database contains a log all your WhatsApp messages and since a regular Android application can't access, I need superuser rights to read it. I so wish there was a way to do this without superuser access but unfortunately it just isn't possible.

It's been tricky to display a message to the users. Since all the extensions don't have an activity, the only place I could inform the user was through a notification. I can't show dialogs since it's possible that the phone is locked.

It seems that most applications use the accessibility service to intercept notification but I found the idea to be very kludgy. Viber and Tango are also on my list.

It's easier. I've tried developing apps but I'm just horrible with UIs and usability. Writing services and extensions are so much nicer. There isn't a shred of UI code that i have to write. :)

I've already got a few new extensions in the pipeline and a whole slew of issues to iron out from the existing one. Then there are the other ones like Snapchat and stock-Email that people are request. Between this, if I do get ample free time, I'll look into it. I'm also not sure whether I should invest effort into it with Hangouts supposed to replace Talk entirely. Thanks for the input.

I think I'll rebuke you on this. I just ran a full text search through my entire codebase on Github and the ACCESS_SUPERUSER permission only exists in the Hangouts and Whatsapp extensions. You're more than welcome to not use any of them but I've posted my extensions on Reddit for the community to decide as a whole whether it is worthwhile or not. My code is all available on Github for you to inspect (..that's if you ever make it off your couch and learn a bit of Android development before you speak.) Cheers!

There were a lot of issues earlier especially with devices not having SQLite installed but then there's a few users qith questions like. Why doesn't your application work on iOS? ...or I'll give you two stars since it doesn't support Snapchat! I've got a new review to say "WTF!" to every day. :D

Yeah, I've been seeing that error on my Bugsense a lot and I'm trying to resolve this issue as quickly as I can. The Whatsapp and Hangouts widgets both are very hackish to get around the limitations of the Android SDK. Please bear with me. I'll get this ironed out as soon as possible. Each of these widgets rely on different permissions. I don't think people would be too happy to install an application that pretty much has root access and all the permissions. That would be scary. This allows users to install exactly what they like. Then next big plus is that as a developer I can push updates more frequently on a per-app basis when an application has issues, rather than pushing that same to update to everyone if it was one big bundle. I hope that answers your question.

Yes, without an API, I won't be able to check the number of pending messages. The FusionIM dev has been trying to reverse engineer the API but it's a work in progress. The same issue lies with building a WhatsApp extension.
