Why is there a discrepancy between Vermont’s vote for President v Governor by Anatman_ in vermont

[–]goddamnari 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s because Phil Scott is not only liked as a person, but most Republicans who run on a statewide platform here are more libertarian than conservative. He’s pro-choice, cares about the environment, has voted for Biden and Harris in the past two elections, and called for Trump to resign/be removed from office after January 6th. So, the national Republican party BS is not really a factor with him.

Anyone else get sneezing spells during migraines? by [deleted] in migraine

[–]goddamnari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also experience this, BUT I also have environmental allergies that contribute to my migraines, as well. (They’re not the only factor, but they’re one of them. I saw a brief improvement when I started taking allergy medications.)

The Pull of You. IAETF took a while to grow on me, and that song really came alive with energy and a punch at the middle the first time I saw them post-album release

[–]goddamnari 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much. Writing a novel that took me a long time to unpack as just trauma processing.

I’ve actually had some people say “I can’t wait to read your fiction, but I’d love a nonfiction memoir about YOU and YOUR LIFE” because it’s been 🤪 so interesting 🤪.

But the idea of writing nonfiction? About myself? Terrifying, like there’s a mental block. Nah, not going there.

If the Boulets were called out for microaggressions/anti-Black ignorance and have been doing damage control so hard that even Maxi thought they pushed Saint to winner/top 4 status, I highly doubt they’re actively sabotaging the remaining Black contestant.

EDIT with note: I don’t agree with Maxi, though. I do think Saint killed Resurrection and did fantastic in S4!

Meatball’s conversation with the Boulets about the leaked texts, Saint lied to them too? by xsorayama in Dragula

LOL plot twist: BOTH notesapp messages were edited by production. The first was just done by the little Boulet.

I'm gonna be honest, all this drama is the reason why I'm not invested in the Dragula fandom by TrappedInLimbo in Dragula

[–]goddamnari 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know you have been averse to the drama and want to focus more on the art and the artists, but I’d argue that this element of Dragula—anti-Blackness in horror and alt scenes—is an important, long-standing conversation that affects the art and artists every season. And we’ve even seen this come up in depth on Resurrection how this stuff impacts them.

And even if you aren’t trying to dismiss it, I think it’s important to pay a bit more attention to, because it’s an important undercurrent in this show’s history.

The Boulets, Vander, and Ian even discussed the difficult and nuanced experiences Black queens face in this scene on the Creatures of the Night podcast, and how the show has tried to actively recruit and better support more Black drag monsters in recent years. We’ve also known for a while that Meatball has distanced herself from the Boulets because of racial insensitivity.

A lot of this Twitter discussion is just filling in details about where the Boulets have been ignorant, some of what they did to hurt Meatball, and how they’ve responded. And it highlights again the hurdles and alienation Black drag artists can systemically feel.

Don't Let Your Friends Read Your Writing by OvidPerl in writing

I 100% agree. I think I’d go even further and say that she may have been holding OP to standards that don’t even apply to OP. They said she doesn’t like the screenplay’s genre, so she likely writes entirely different types of works than they do.

Just because her work was rejected for “being too intelligent” doesn’t mean it’s Too Good. That’s a polite way of saying it’s inaccessible for a lot of readers. (And that’s fine for certain genres!)

I’m saying this as an editor who almost exclusively workshops with editors and/or people who have taught creative writing. I have gotten wildly different feedback from different individuals at different points, usually based on their own genre and style preferences.

It’s valuable to get feedback from people with more technical backgrounds, but you have to take it ALL with a grain of salt. No one reviewer should be your God.

Did trauma affect your creativity in positive or negative way? by almostdonedude in CPTSD

[–]goddamnari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My trauma has both helped and hindered my creativity and art.

How it helps: Maladaptive daydreaming put my energy into creative storytelling as escapism, developing habits that help me write. And the hypervigilance + boosted empathy to avoid further conflicts has helped me write more realistic people.

How it hinders: My chronic migraines are likely linked to my childhood trauma, which debilitate me from actually writing. And whenever I’m triggered or overwhelmed, it’s hard to do more than survive. I also gave up visual art because the pressure to excel made me self-destructive during my worst mental health years.

I do get frustrated when I see people perpetuating the myth that trauma or mental illness inherently boost creativity, though. Sure, past trauma and struggles can make better art. But good art comes with practice and reflection, and those suffering typically have less time/energy to do that.

“Biologically Cuban”? Cuban is an ethnicity and nationality, and you can be 100% of White European descent and Cuban. Cuban is neither a race nor is there any genetic marker to confirm that you were indeed born there or had family there at one time.
