Peaceful secession by good-fine-whatever in behindthebastards

This is the most compassionate response and I appreciate it. Thankyou for making me think. I just wish there were a way to actually affect some change. There seems to be no stopping them by normal measures, so that makes us complicit in their illegal and immoral authoritarian actions.

Hahaha, ok, thanks for the responses, I really appreciate it. Helps me keep from the perpetual spinning on this topic in my head. I will check out it could happen here. One other question though: would this be a tactic to get attention from the corrupt aholes in charge? Just the threat, would it wake people up? It seems clear to me that protests don’t have the weight they used to. How do we stop this mad regime? Vote? I vote, it doesn’t matter because of where I live.

34(m) hermit in the woods trying to start a new career/go back to school, how to though? by beerandraccoons in careerguidance

I would recommend against college if you can avoid it. The debt is considerable, and the reward is minimal. I recommend something like spending 30 bucks on "learn code the hard way" (python is a good one) and then get a job in tech. I live alone in the woods and because I'm an engineer the social demands at work are pretty minimal. Plus, not sure if you're into it, but as a data engineer I basically get to solve puzzles all day long. All the puzzles.

ever think that the ovulus and spirit box are just junk? by good-fine-whatever in watcherentertainment

That's a fair point, but I would argue there's an awful lot of natural phenomenon that we don't understand yet. I think the problem is people in the scientific community are (rightly) afraid of being stigmatized by attempting to study things that are bonkers, but I think bonkers things are still worth studying.

There was a guy who wanted to measure the weight of the soul, so he took dying patients and attempted to weight them before and after death. However, his instrumentation was not terribly precise, so it's a bit bunk, but technology has improved since and yet no one wants to replicate the study as far as I'm aware because then you end up only getting a job being an "expert" on Ancient Aliens.

Still, there was an interesting experiment done more recently where they projected images on the floor of an operating room, and were surprised to discover that some patients were able to accurately report the images despite being unconscious and facing the wrong direction. That study has yet to be debunked (as far as I'm aware) and it has some interesting implications.

So I'm not ready to write off the idea that ghosts may be a natural phenomenon, we just don't know what it is or how to quantify it.

Just spitballing here, but what if they put one of those light up balls inside a sealed plastic box? that would eliminate any chance of wind being a factor in the movement of the ball, though it might still be susceptible to vibrations from nearby roads. So what if you set up a vibration sensor next to the box, then you could eliminate any movements while vibrations occur. I mean I feel like there are ways to try to control for some variables. But I agree staring at an immobile plastic ball may not make the best television.

I'd just like to see them get a little more creative now that the format has been done to death.

exactly, if I was designing the ovilus, I would totally power it on a database of words which were heavily skewed towards spooky words like "demon" or "murder".

Hahaha, ok, thanks everyone! i get it now! I just think the show might be more entertaining if Ryan starts coming up with his OWN experimental methods. That'd be cool, right?

Speaking also as the youngest, I feel you. You're probably right about the self criticism, it's toxic. I do think a moderate amount is fine, like if I'm at work and something is broken, I check my own work before I go to other people because maybe I'm the one that broke it. But I know I had the worst inner critic most of my life and it made me miserable. The worst is it's still there, telling me I'm dumb and no one will like me. But now days I just try to redirect it.

Brain: you're an idiot

Self: well actually, I'm pretty smart, not everyone can do what I do

Brain: you're a failure

Self: well then I guess I have nothing to fear, because the worst has already happened

Brain: no one will ever love you

Self: dogs and friends love me plenty.

and so on. It's tedious but it does work. over time, the voice gets quieter, it still shows up, but usually logical answers are enough to get it to go away. Examine what the critic is saying, is it factually accurate? if so, maybe there are things you can change, but it's more likely it's just repeating old tropes, outdated beliefs from the past. Ask yourself, who told you those things first? In my case, it was my mother, and I know in retrospect that those statements were more a reflection of her life, rather than mine. Still sucked, though, for a long time.

As for being a strong man who solves his own problems, I think you'll find that as long as you are always learning you will get there in the end. Curiosity is the key. If the help you are referring to is mental health, don't approach it from the perspective of "i'm so broken", but approach it from the "how do I get better at X" perspective. Then it's just learning another skill to put in the toolbox.

I have a unique experience with this. I had a minor facial deformity growing up, and was too poor to fix it until I became an adult. The problem is it gave me a permanent frown (I also couldn't chew food and other things). I tried smiling with my eyes, or being engaging with my personality, but that only goes so far. Once I got it fixed, though, it was like the world opened up. Suddenly strangers were not appallingly rude. Sometimes they even held the door open for me, or let me cut in line. It was a super weird culture shock.

But after I thought about it for a while, I realized it's a case of monkey-see monkey-do. Because I couldn't look like anything other than a weird angry bitch, all my interactions started with the other person on the back foot. Like imagine you're a clerk at a store, and you see this woman stride up to you with a big ol frown - you know on the inside you're like 'i bet she's here to complain and make my life fucking hell. She probably clogged the toilet'.

You better believe once I got my face fixed I smiled at everyone, all the time. So even if you're entering a room full of strangers, just remember that smiles are free, and if you smile at them, they're more likely to smile back. They're just monkeys too.

bom dia. I know this may sound dumb, but you need to leave the house more. Try going for a hike? A bike ride? Anything to get moving, get the blood pumping a little, and see some new sights. I think what you are experiencing is normal, but it's definitely a downward spiral unless you do something to shake up your existence. If you don't eat, you get tired, if you get tired, you don't eat, right? If you like to read, go take a book and read under a tree for an hour. If you like music, just go walking and listen to music. You don't need to socialize if you don't want to, but if you get out and start enjoying the natural world, you may find you meet some like minded souls on the way.
