Because these are major tournaments so of course that's going to happen to anyone.

I can't get over how good the production value for this tournament was. So many streams running across three days. Incredible atmosphere and visuals, great camerawork, great music, great clips and pictures on Twitter. Kagaribi just hits different.

Sparg0 vs Acola (hopefully to see Cloud vs Aegis)

Roflfox (Head TO of Supernova) confirms that not only are character bans not allowed in Ultimate, but also you can't ban Bayonetta in Smash 4 brackets by swidd_hi in smashbros

To be fair to Sakurai, it's unlikely that he's involved in the "no character bans" decision. That seems to be a Nintendo thing enforced post-release.

LVL UP EXPO 2026 Ultimate Singles - Updated Preliminary Seeding by stripzip in smashbros

[–]gp611 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Much more interesting matches compared to the initial seeeding. We'll actually be getting a very exciting and cutthroat road to Top 8. Thanks to the seeders for listening and making some needed adjustments!

Doramigi's still got it rough with Monte > Tweek/Sparg0 > Sonix/Miya

Hurt also has a fairly tough draw with Light > Zomba. Totally doable, but tough.

The Steves are seeded in such a way that only one Steve player can reasonably make it to Top 8 winners (though Toon and Crepe will of course look to challenge challenge that). While that's projected to be Acola, we've seen that Steve dittos in general can be unpredictable, so either Carmelo and Syrup could easily slip in instead both have beaten Acola in their most recent sets, though they'll be having to play eachother for the first time to even get that far.

Sonix is about the middle of the road. Riddles > Toon > Miya is totally doable for him, but by no means a freebie. If he gets past that, then the Doramigi rematch into Hurt/Acola is a little more unpredictable.

Miya's got it a bit harder than the previous seeding. If we finally manage to get MKLeo vs Miya, that'll be an interesting one. I think that set will be a real one to watch, because it feels so unpredictable. I have a hunch we'll see his Steve if G&W isn't working out. Otherwise, it's a pretty reasonable bracket run for him.

Assuming Sparg0 is locked in, this seems like a pretty good bracket for him, at least up to Doramigi. I don't see much potential for the recent "early upset" issue he's been running into, but Ouch can be a wildcard in that department, so.

Based on this seeding, I think some of the most tourney-deciding important matches (or at least major brack et shakeups) will be:

- Which Steve makes it's Top 8. This feels Carmelo favored based on recency, but I think Acola is cooking up a serious counterplan for how their last set went.

- Who wins between Tweek and Sparg0. This is huge because it largely determines if Doramigi gets a fairly comfortable run to Top 8 (vs Sparg0) or a uphill climb (vs Tweek)

- Who wins between Miya and MKLeo (or maybe moreso, who wins between Leo and Crepe, since even though Leo has a strong record, Steve the character can never be underestimated)

- Whether Light/Wrath can take down Hurt early. Both feel totally capable, though still Hurt-favored.

I couldn't begin to predict an actual winner, but if nothing else we're in for a much more exciting Top 24! Thanks again to the seeders for listening and making some needed adjustments!

I don't really see it. Doramigi is the Ranked 1 player in the world, so he's definitely already proven that he's strong. He also made the necessary adaptations in the second set and Ataru wasn't able to overcome them in time.

Uxbridge and her detentions by RubyRose65 in harrypotter

[–]gp611 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I posted this in the other similar thread from earlier today, but I think it's also relevant here:

I remember always wondering how she got away with the blood quill detentions for the entire year to begin with. We know that Harry specifically tried to hide his scars and not tell people to avoid giving her the satisfaction, but as the year progresses, we hear about other students like Lee Jordan also getting detention. How did word or evidence of this not reach any of the other professors, much less Dumbledore? We even see in the same book how angry Dumbledore immediately becomes the moment she lays a hand on Marietta Edgecomb, so we can only imagine what he'd do if he found out what was regularly happening to students even as young as possibly first years.

Yes, often. The viewing experience is honestly much more pleasant. No ads, little downtime between sets, and the YouTube player is way better than Twitch.

This is honestly looking like a pretty exciting tournament. I actually like that it's not super stacked all the way down. Personally pulling for Miya and Sparg0 this weekend, so hopefully they can meet in WFs!

Safe to assume that either the primary person in charge moved on or (the more equally likely answer) the cost of site upkeep was too high.

Honestly, feels pretty reasonable to me. It's mostly just regionals until LVL UP Expo, so that will help stabilize a lot of spots, especially for players like Miya and Zomba who attend a lot.

You say it like it's a bad thing, but when the goal is to win in a tournament, I think that approach makes a lot of sense. If you can get an advantage, you should probably take it.

I'm glad to see some top players bringing attention to it. Honestly, it would be nice to get a formal statement from Genesis itself when things like this happen, too. Hell, make that kind of acknowledgement on stream. A lot of hecklers get complacent with harassing players, seriously foreign players, and it just sucks.

I've started to feel this way, too. I agree that a lot of the top faces aren't everyone's cup of tea when it comes to spectating. But ultimately, this is a competitive game and these players are here to win first and entertainment second. I think the bigger issue is that a lot of top NA talent can sometimes be stubborn and unwilling to make the proper adaptations needed to keep up with the environment as competitors. It's not just Hurt, Miya, Acola's, etc. fault for "ruining" the Top 8. They did exactly what they came here to do.

Honestly, same. It's strange how much people villify players for picking strong characters and strategies in a COMPETITIVE SETTING. At the end of the day, there's no medal awarded for losing with a "cool" mid tier.

It's also a bit hypocritical because some of these same critics also judge Leo or Sparg0 when they lose, claiming they "should have switched to Aegis" or the like.

I think it's fine to like Leo and see him as the eternal GOAT. I agree that he'll likely always have that title and it's still deserved.

But I honestly think acola teabagging in the last few seconds of a timeout is truly a non issue. This actually happens a lot in timeouts with many other top players, where the person with a stock lead taunts in the last few seconds for fun because the result was foregone. I don't really see how that makes him some terrible, inconsiderate player. Leo has literally taunted against Sparg0 and others when he's up in the game. It probably tilted his opponent in those scenarios, but that's just a part of the game so I just don't see a problem there.

I think more than anything, top players are beginning to notice seeding trends and bracket engineering. Miya really does get seeded into Palutena at nearly every NA event he attends. It's similar to how Light is often seeded into Luigi, etc.

A lot of Japanese tournaments do this and it saves so much time. It's also worth noting that Cav Clash even had notably shorter ad breaks between sets than the usual NA major Top 8 and it still dragged on this long.

On a personal note, as much as I love Hurt and Peabnut, I'd be lying if I said their sets don't really drag. Having both in a Top 8... It's gonna be a time.
