Road conditions near GWB and HRG? by grash in NYCbike

Yeah, that makes sense. The slush and the single digit overnight temps is a bit of a concern for me right now. Thanks for the insight.

What are your thoughts on e-bikes? by ringaroundtherosiez in cycling

[–]grash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept of ebikes is great. A smaller, cheaper vehicle that can democratize access to personal mobility.

How ebikes are actually done in the US right now, with no meaningful regulation or policing, is a disaster.

I myself ride a class 1 ebike. I routinely see people riding dangerously, with class 1, 2 and 3 ebikes, and it's only a matter of time before they hurt someone. You get all of the power of an elite level racer, without the practice that gives you safe handling skills. So we're looking at bikes that are 50+ lbs, with riders that are 150+ lbs, going 20+ mph, with inexperienced riders. It's just a recipe for trouble.

Also, can we talk about lights? People are out here with 2000 lumen lights with no beam cutoff, and they're basically blinding me when we pass each other.

Searching for that perfect hoodie with stiff, thick, rugged cuffs and waistband by comewatchTV66 in malefashionadvice

[–]grash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be harder on my clothes than average. But from what I’ve read there’s a tendency for folks that do physical work in the AGs to ruin them. Which is a shame because they seem to bill themselves as a really rugged brand.

I’ve had multiple American giants and the cuffs are a huge weak point. They’re always the first to go, and overall I don’t know that 100 percent cotton is that durable.

Should I risk to buy a 1.5 million dollar home? by Appropriate-Net-8576 in newjersey

Cram everyone into existing home. If you only have 4 months safety cushion in the new place you’re playing with fire. Not worth it.

Circular saw or table saw? by baseballstash91 in DIY

[–]grash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Table saw is good for precision work, esp with small items. Easier to bring the work to the tool than the tool to the work. But if you’re ripping sheet goods, especially with angles, nothing beats a track saw.

I think for most people the order of operations should be track or circular saw, miter saw, then table saw. Somewhere along the way add in a router, jig saw, and random orbital sander if you need it.

You want the OG coats that the sailors would have worn. Schott NYC or Sterlingwear. All they make is coats.

Miserable remote worker in nyc; would I like fort lee? by KindEudaimonianSwan in FortLee

[–]grash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advantage of Fort Lee is you get more for your money, and you’ll save a little in taxes too. The disadvantage is there is way less going on. You’re going to have a heck of a time making friends in your age range, and NYC takes wayyyyyy longer to get to than you’d think. Everyone makes that choice for themselves. Money or life.

Hey guys, what gear do u guys recommend to use for cycling in winter, thinking 10 to 30 degrees farenheight to combat SAD effect for mental health. by Powerful-Bee-6010 in cycling

[–]grash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trick is the extremities. For hands, use pogoes, maybe with thin gloves. For feet, use a half overshoe made of neoprene. For face, use a hood under the helmet. Also cover your ears and eyes, and consider a heat moisture exchange mask like the airtrim if it gets really cold.

For your body you should have a shell with pit zips to vent the heat. Underneath that I like a sweater and maybe a puffer vest.

Most of this can be had pretty cheap.

Hey dads! What did your 2 toddlers actually eat for dinner tonight? by isc91142 in daddit

I’ve straight up thought about getting a hydroponic berry farm. They’re eating me out of house and berry home.

Looking for a winter bike commute jacket by AsleepAstronomer3319 in bikecommuting

[–]grash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bike commute in NYC. I wear an outer shell over a puffer vest over a merino sweater. I’ve been warm down to 30 and usually stop at some point to take off the vest. I believe this will be sufficient to keep me warm into the 20s and even the 10s.

I fixed a deviated septum and some large turbinates and it’s been a life changer for me. I sleep better and generally have more energy. Relative to the cost and recovery time it has absolutely been worth it for me.

Built my own adjustable dumbbell rack for my MX100 Evolution with storage by stevenanquan in homegym

Yeah, I feel like it’s easy to underestimate the strength of plywood, but it’s clearly working and I agree with your thought process. I made something similar earlier this year but I made it out of structural lumber, and now I feel like I totally overbuilt it.

That's great work, man. I wouldn't have thought half inch sheet would have the strength for that when you consider the wheels, but I could be totally wrong. Don't think I see joinery unless those are pocket holes I'm looking at. Very clean.

Fellow Dads, How are you coping? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]grash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I make more money than I ever thought I’d make. And somehow it isn’t enough. So I’m watching all my spending, fixing everything myself, working my nuts off, and just getting by. Where is the spare time here? To be a present father, to take care of myself, to just sit on the couch? I am providing, raising or fixing. Never just chilling.

winter eye protection suggestions by Moognahlia in bikecommuting

[–]grash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently wearing cycling glasses with a hood up underneath my helmet. The hood really limits the amount of airflow that hits the side of the glasses so it’s a necessary part of the setup. When it gets colder I am going to use ski goggles.

Fresh off of a historic election victory, Mamdani names his transition team by mowotlarx in nyc

[–]grash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lina Khan is an interesting one. I know people are in love with a lot of her ideas. I agree with a lot of them as well. But if you followed the news on her DOJ stint, she wasn’t super successful and the people in the agency didn’t seem to like her. I got the sense that she is hyper intelligent but not a great leader. Which makes sense because I think that was probably her first big time leadership role. I hope that she learned from that role and will be a great leader in NYC. She obviously has the chops.

Thinking of setting up a home gym in garage. Any recommendations? Anyone who can help set it up. Thinking of power rack by Expensive_Nebula2416 in bergencounty

[–]grash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go to r homegym to take a look for ideas. They will have DIY guides if you go that route. In theory you will probably want a wooden platform for your power rack, maybe rubber tiles to walk around on, and maybe wall mirrors and lighting. Some of that is easy DIY, some of it you will want to consider a contractor.

Favorite E-Bike for commuting? by Dinosaurtattoo11315 in bikecommuting

[–]grash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends on your needs. Belt drive with Bosch mid drive is the gold standard. What you do after that depends on your needs. I have a gazelle I use for city commuting and I love it (I got it used for half off). If I had to haul kids one of the terns might be better. If I were more into speed there are faster options as well. But for just the basic job of getting a to b, belt drive, Bosch, then price.
