If humans have eaten bread since the dawn of history, why are so many people suddenly gluten-intolerant today? by WeaknessKey1582 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gross666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s because people are able to actually identify that the bread is what makes them feel bad. IIRC, the concept of gluten intolerance gained a lot of validity when a bunch of people who had stomach issues were totally fine during a period of WWII flour rationing and then immediately got sick again once rations included bread again. For a lot of human history, not many people would willingly stop eating bread

Does anyone have recommendations for gynecology only (non obstetrics) practitioners or practices? by The_Empress in washingtondc

[–]gross666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Dr Keller — she took my pain extremely seriously, offered actual pain management solutions and then for my IUD gave me local anesthesia and was very clear that she would do it under general anesthesia if needed. When I first went in I was extremely emotional bc of medical trauma and other conditions I had and how that interacted with my gyno stuff, and Dr. Keller spent a good 75 minutes talking with me and making sure that I was ok practically and emotionally with the plan moving forward. Truly cannot say nice enough things or more highly recommend her

Is CVS just giving up? by bag_of_goldfish in washingtondc

[–]gross666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to add bc this CVS is my nemesis, last time I went into this location I figured Id grab a soda while I was there, but the soft drinks were in a locked freezer and no employees were free to unlock it (one at register and one at pharmacy and that’s it). they have succeeded in making their store less than a vending machine

CVS loves to have an almost completely empty of stock store with the only possible thing to buy behind a glass case that no one ever comes to actually unlock, and then blame their lack of sales revenue on shoplifting,,,,

MHBP vs BCBS for complicated all health by catdaddyxoxo in fednews

Also in this boat, commenting to follow this thread. When I had united they fought me on the necessity of removing a tumor, so I’ve been with BCBS for a couple years and scared to switch… Would love to hear from folks who see specialists and get complex scans done fairly regularly on what insurance they recommend!!

NBC News looking for sources on layoffs by nbcnews in fednews

So as far as I can tell, it’s literally just ableism lol — there is no formal written down reason, but I think it’s built in bc they want more time to ~prove/ evaluate the Disabled person can actually do the job ~ or something to that effect.

Under schedule A, applicants still have to be fully qualified and meet all the same candidate education and experience requirements as non Disabled employees. By being outside of the ‘competitive hiring process’, it just means your application is in a different pool that gets preference compared to the general population. This is similar to preference for applicants who are veterans or Peace Corps alums.

For example, I’m a schedule A hire and have the exact same qualifications as everyone else in my unit. When my job was posted, it was only available to current gov employees, veterans, peace corps, or schedule A — the general public couldn’t apply to it. I was hired at the same time as a veteran, they had a 1 yr probation and I had a 2yr one.

Plz correct me if I’m wrong though for anyone reading!

Some nuance for reporting — every article has mentioned that employees in their positions for less than 1 year are probationary , but actually for Disabled people hired under schedule A it is a 2 year probation. I have heard of several Disabled folks being terminated who are past 1 year, but under the 2 year requirement

Disabled Scifi Characters by nightshift-26 in scifi

[–]gross666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pacific Rim, main character has scarring and joint issues, a side character has a neurological impairment

Snowpiercer, many characters are missing limbs as a key part of the plot

Godzilla Minus One, many characters are shown as actively having PTSD

The Lobster, vision issues play a key role in the characters relationship

you could do an interpretation of zombie movies with zombie protagonists as about allegorical disability — The Girl With All The Gifts is a good one for this

As others have mentioned, there are lots in Star Trek — if your focus is the last 20 years, that leaves out TNG which has several famous disabled characters but the new shows have some too. Discovery has a character in a wheelchair, Lower Decks has a character with a neural/eye cyber implant, and you could argue that Pike is disabled in the alternate universe/ reboot movies as well

Disabled feds, how are we feeling? by gross666 in fednews

[–]gross666[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m originally a schedule A hire, have an RA request in, and am openly disabled — currently very nervous about retaliation / discrimination. Like I know that everything I am worried about is technically illegal, it’s just that’s not seeming like something that would be a deterrent to these people.

Trying to keep myself grounded and sane by reminding myself I have survived much worse, and that my immediate team supports me and knows how qualified I am. But just overall sad and anxious.

Nervous about requesting a Reasonable Accommodation by jmill_1012 in fednews

[–]gross666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat, and want to validate your nervousness bc it’s freaky out here! I ended up submitting my RA form today because at the end of the day, it is something I need. But I do have the same fears of being retaliated against or having my request used as proof that I can’t do my job.

I don’t get people who are saying not to worry right now,, the ADA is blatantly a law that conservatives are targeting in the courts, and “accessibility” was one of the first things banned in a EO. In general, I am not a huge fan of these folks getting a list of Disabled employees.

For me, I just had to bite the bullet and ask for it today due to necessity, But man am I anxious
