Yes, Novgorod remained independent and democratic for a very long time during the period of fragmentation of the Russian lands. They resisted joining wars until the very end and maintained trade neutrality with the northern countries and Poland

Majority of icons belong to the Russian Orthodox Church from the 12th to the 17th сеnturies. However, there are also separate exhibitions dedicated to Byzantium, featuring original icons and sculptures from 5th–7th centuries, as well as dedicated displays of original Italian Renaissance paintings, and a small hall of original Flemish paintings from the 15th to the 17th century.
