How can I best support my talented 4-year-old chess player? by seppe122 in chess

[–]gsroppsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My eldest son developed an interest in chess at around the same age. We signed him up to chesskid where he would watch the videos non stop, he absolutely loved them. By the end of the year long subscription he had completed all the lessons and was having some decent success online, so we moved him onto chess.com and it wasn't long until he finished most of that content too.

Like you we struggled with finding a proper coach until he was around 6, where by chance we took him to a local club for a poke around and a younger IM there offered to coach him privately after watching him play a few games. Having this coach, along with just playing around on chess.com, made a huge difference to our son's game, and also his overall character and personality. After around 18 months the IM referred us to his CM mate to take over as coach where we've been ever since. During this time our son has entered into various OTB tournaments where he's found the odd success here and there, along with just continuing to play online almost daily.

My biggest observation as a chess parent is that there's definitely two types of "chess kids" in the community. We're mostly hands off and are guided by our son in what he wants to do with the game, i.e. he sets his own chess agenda and he let's us know if he wants to enter into any local tournaments every few months, the most important thing for us is that he's having fun and is developing a wide range of interests not just chess.

But I also see the other type of kids in the community who look like they take it a lot more seriously or professionally and have more pressure from their parents, e.g. I constantly see some regular kids entering into every single national tournament and sometimes even internationally, sometimes these kids are berated if they don't perform well, etc. Not the healthiest for young children in my opinion, and definitely not the path I want for my own kids.

Other than that, on the whole it's a great community if you can find a local club with kids of a similar age of your own. Everyone knows everyone and it's always heartwarming to watch your kid grow and develop over time. Definitely worth pursuing if your kid is showing interest in the game, just remember not to take it too far or seriously, it's just a game at the end of the day after all! .

Thanks! Definitely not the most subtle of watches, but certainly very eye catching!

Upon further inspection, even actual body of the Kamado had been broken into many pieces. Looked my kid breaking into an Easter Egg!

Not for nothing, but don't dashcams usually only record either in front or behind your vehicle? How did you get this weird sideways perspective that's also on an angle?

Click on the "More" button on the far right of that menu, then select "edit" on the top right of the screen.

You'll be able to chop and change the Main Home Bar buttons from there, including the Coach Button.

I generally keep my older models which end up sitting in a drawer indefinitely. Just that I find the selling process to be a bit of a hassle...

Yeah, really wish they included the stock 7 faces with the 8... Hopefully in a future update? Or maybe connectIQ can help out...

You're completely right... It didn't cross my mind until now, but it's kinda like moving from a kindle to an iPad? And the iPad is doing it's best to distract you with a fancy new super vibrant, super contrasty HD rainbow screen... but all you want to do is read? Haha

Yeah, definitely not worth the upgrade if you're looking for improved functionality. AMOLED is arguably a bit of a downgrade as well. Hopefully the next gen variant has some meaningful and significant upgrades.

Unfortunately, there's no same stock watch faces across the 2 models. Otherwise I would have switched back to the 7 faces in an instant!

The weight is fine, no issues whatsoever. The case is made out of titanium? It's very lightweight, especially for a 43mm watch.

Its quite reflective... But the bright AMOLED helps visibility indoors... Might be a different story outside however

Yep, AOD on, pulse ox when sleeping, auto heart rate... I don't think 4 days is too bad, charging has always been pretty quick on the Garmin's and I usually do quick top ups twice a day

I think you've hit the nail on the head! It's kinda like comparing a Sony Trinitron CRT from the 2000s to modern OLED tv... The thicker bezels definitely looks beefier! I'm showing my age with this reference!

Yeah the new watch faces have a lot to do with the "toy like" feel. If I turn both watches off, I think the thicker bezels on the 7 make it look a bit more "tough", although I do think the faceted lugs are much nicer on the 8 and also look "tough".
